Baltimore, MD – – It wasn’t pretty, but the DC Grays will take it. The Grays were the beneficiaries of seven errors by the homestanding Baltimore Dodgers and won by a score of 11-9.
It was the Grays’ first win after three losses to open the Ripken League season. The win lifted the Grays to 1-3, good enough for fourth place in the South Division.
The game wasn’t a masterpiece. It featured nine errors (two by the Grays) and a whopping 20 walks (11 by DC pitchers). The score went back and forth until the Grays seemingly took control of the game with a five run seventh inning to take a 9-3 lead. Amazingly, the Grays tallied those five runs without so much as one hit. The damage done thanks to a combination of walks, errors and wild pitches by the home team.
The Dodgers struck back – tying the game with three in the seventh and two in the eighth.
The Grays notched two in the ninth to reclaim the lead 11-9 – thanks to back to back triples by 3B DJ Lardge (Old Dominion) and RF Jahleel Sewer (Virginia State), followed by a single by C Evan Baer (Christopher Newport).
Mitch McIntyre (BYU) pitches a scoreless ninth to nail down the win, preserving a win for Nathan Moore (Cincinnati).
The Grays return home tonight, for a 7:00pm game against the Gaithersburg Giants at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
