ALEXANDRIA, VA – The DC Grays fell to the Alexandria Aces for the fourth time this season on Wednesday, 8-7. The loss is the Grays fourth in a row, dropping them to 11-20 on the season.
The Grays, like they have done many times this season, came out of the gate swinging. All-Stars 2B Lamar Briggs (Jackson State) and DH Harrison Freed (Butler) both recorded an RBI in the first inning on a single and a groundout respectively.
Briggs scored on a wild pitch in the third, but the Aces snatched the lead from the Grays with five-runs in bottom half of the inning.
Trailing 8-4 in the eighth, and with two outs, the Grays threatened a comeback when Aces LF Kam Smith (Northern Illinois) dropped Freed’s fly ball. 3B Ro Williams (Jackson State) singled on a 0-2 count scoring Freed from second base. SS Jacob Maekawa (San Diego State) followed suit with a single of his own that scored Williams.
Later in the inning, CF Cory Alexander (Old Dominion) singled in Maekawa to bring the game within one run. It wouldn’t be enough for the Grays as Johnson popped out to left field, stranding the 14th and 15thrunners of the game.
LHP David Moore (Fairleigh Dickinson) was handed the loss after giving up three runs (all earned) and walking three batters while only recording a single out.
Fellow lefty Phillip Ahern (West Virginia) pitched four scoreless innings while recording five strikeouts. This was the second time in five relief appearances Ahern did not surrender a run.
The Grays look to halt the four-game skid Thursday night against the Express in Rockville at 7 p.m. Mason Belcher (Catholic U of America) is scheduled to start for the Grays.
