Due to the construction going on around Hoy Field (Gallaudet University) we have made the major decision to re-schedule today’s free youth baseball clinic as well as the remaining youth clinics on our schedule. We apologize for any mix-ups this may cause.
The youth clinics are very important to our organization, our sponsors, the community we play in, and the families we serve. We will have our clinics which will help hundreds of DC youth develop their baseball skills. More importantly, this is a great opportunity for youth to meet college baseball players and ask them questions about the game as well as questions about being in college. It is our expectation that this experience will leave a lasting impression on not only the youth who participate, but also our collegiate ball players! Here is the new schedule for clinics: Wednesday July 17 (10a-1p) Saturday July 20 (10a-1p) Wednesday July 24 (10a-1p) For more details and how to sign your child or youth group up for each clinic please contact our General Manager, Antonio Scott (202-315-6945) (antonioscott@smarteryouth.org)

Mitch Leeds (Lafayette) recorded two wins for the Grays Thursday against the Silver Spring/Takoma Thunderbolts, pitching the last two innings of the suspended game from Wednesday and then starting the regularly scheduled game and pitching six more effective innings. The first game got its start on Wednesday at the Thunderbolts’ Blair Stadium, but was suspended in the eleventh due to a rain delay. The Grays needed a two-run home run from Chris Bzozowski (Keystone College) to send it to extra innings. The game continued scoreless from there until its suspension after the end of the tenth. Upon resumption on Wednesday at Hoy Field, the T-Bolts quickly substituted for the catcher, then pinch ran for the backup in the bottom of the eleventh. This quickly became important in the top of the twelfth, when the emergency catcher threw away a bunt attempt by Eric Ramsey (Wake Forest), allowing Bzozowski to score from second to give the Grays a 6-5 lead. Leeds worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the inning to end the game and pick up his first win of the day. But he wasn’t done. Remaining on the mound to start the second game, he allowed just two hits and a walk over his first five innings, handcuffing the Thunderbolts hitters. The Grays offense, meanwhile, finally broke out, scoring five in the second and four more in the fifth off beleaguered T-Bolts starter JoshuaKisamore (Florence-Darlington Tech). SS DJ Miller (DelawareState), and DH Kelton Caldwell (BYU) had RBI hits in the second in the second before C Cody Walker (Mississippi State) capped the inning with a two-run single. After Leeds mowed down the T-bolts in the top of the third, the offense went right back to work, with OF Brandon Kiser (Grambling State) doubling home Ramsey and then scoring on a single by Miller. Walker added another RBI hit, and first baseman Jud Sherrill (Alabama-Huntsville) finished the barrage off with an RBI double. The Grays kept hitting, eventually piling up 17 hits and adding four more runs in the eighth when backup catcher Casey Hicks (Gallaudet) slammed a pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam, the team’s first of the season, to make the final score 13-1. The two wins improved the Grays record to 14-15 going into a full weekend of Ripken League action. The Grays play next on Friday, July 12th at 6:30 pm against the Baltimore Redbirds at Carlo Crispino Stadium in Calvert Hall, Maryland. Grays Press 7/10/13
Last night’s game versus the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts was suspended due to an hour-long rain delay plus field rules to not start an inning after 10:30p. The game is tied 5-5 heading into the top of the 11th inning. The game will be continued today starting 4:00p at Hoy Field before the originally scheduled contest between the two teams at 5:00p. GAME 1: Grays 3, Big Train 1 Thomas Murphy (Williams) had a stellar outing, going six-plus innings, allowing only one run on four hits. Jayson Yano (Stevens Inst of Tech) entered the game in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save. Peyton Fuller (Troy) and Greg Olenski (Maryland) both had RBI doubles in the third which was all the offense the Grays needed to defeat the Big Train in the first game of the double header. GAME 2: Big Train 2, Grays 0 In game two, Michael Boyle (Radford) pitched a complete seven inning game shutout, allowing only three hits, two walks, and striking out seven. David Del Grande (Sacramento State) had a lead-off home run in the first inning, followed by an RBI single from Harrison Bruce (San Francisco) in the second. With Boyle’s dominance, it was enough for the Big Train to take the win and split the double header. Grays next play today on the road at the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts 7:00p at Montgomery Blair High School Due to the construction going on around Hoy Field we have decided to postpone today’s scheduled youth baseball clinic.
We do apologize to any groups who were scheduled to participate today! Please check our web site regularly for the re-scheduled date of the clinic. Andrew Houghton 7/8/13
Cody Walker (Mississippi State) hit a monster walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Grays a 5-4 victory on Monday against the Alexandria Aces at Hoy Field Monday. Walker took a 1-1 fastball high and deep to left, setting off the celebration at home plate and in the stands. His walk-off shot capped a come from behind effort for the Grays, and improved their record to 11-14. The Aces took the lead in the second with three runs against Grays starter Colin Kelly (Catholic University), but Kelly settled down to pitch 8.1 innings as the offense chipped away at the lead. First baseman Jud Sherrill (Alabama-Huntsville) had an RBI single in the fourth to get the Grays on the board. They tied the game in the fifth when right fielder Eric Ramsey (Wake Forest) doubled home Desmond Stegall (Grambling State) and then scored on an error by the Aces shortstop. They would take the lead in the eighth when second baseman Jayson Yano (Stevens Tech) laid down a perfect squeeze bunt with two outs to score the runner from third. With the Grays looking to close out the game, the Aces tied it at four in the top of the ninth against reliever Chris Nee (Catholic University) on a broken bat hit that looped just over the pitcher’s mound and died on the infield grass. But Walker turned the heartbreak to euphoria with his shot. The Grays play next on Tuesday, July 9th against the first-place Bethesda Big Train in a doubleheader at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Maryland. The first game starts at 5:00 pm and will be followed by the nightcap at 7:30. Andrew Houghton 7/7/13
Starter Bryan McHale (Immaculata University) pitched eight innings of one-run ball for the Southern Maryland Nationals as they beat the Grays 3-1 on Sunday at Hoy Field. The loss dropped the Grays to 10-14 on the season. The Nationals scored one in the first and two in the second as Grays starter Enrique Oquendo(McLennan CC) struggled early. Only a great throw from left fielder Greg Olenski (Maryland) to catcher Cody Walker (Mississippi State) to nab a runner at the plate in the second held the Nationals to three runs and limited. The Grays added one of their own in the bottom of the second, with three straight singles loading the bases before a run-scoring double play and a strikeout killed the threat. Oquendo settled down, getting through 5.1 innings. McHale, however, continued to shut down the Grays bats inning after inning. He departed after eight having allowed only five hitsand the one run and reliever John-Austin Shepard (Tusculum College) worked around a leadoff walk to pitch a scoreless ninth and end the Grays hopes. Jacob Williams (George Washington) pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless ball for the Grays in relief. The Grays play next on Monday, July 8th at 5:00 pm against the Alexandria Aces at Hoy Field on the campus of Gallaudet University. Andrew Houghton 7/6/13
The Grays beat the Presstman Cardinals 6-1 Saturday at Joe Cannon to move to 10-13 on the season. Starter Henry Sisson (North Carolina) led the way with a sparkling performance, giving up a run in the second but recovering to pitch 8.1 innings with seven strikeouts. The Grays took the lead in the third when Peyton Fuller (Troy University) singled to lead off the inning and Greg Olenski (Maryland) followed with his third home run of the season. They added another run in the sixth when Fuller tripled home shortstop DJ Miller (Delaware State). That would have been enough for Sisson, but the Grays tacked on two more in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch and an error by the Cardinals shortstop. Sisson got the first out in the bottom of the ninth and looked headed for the complete game but walked the next batter on four straight pitches and gave way to Brian Robett (Greensboro College), who quickly got the last two outs to seal the game for the Grays. The Grays play next on Sunday, July 7 at 1:00 pm against the Southern Maryland Nationals at Hoy Field. Andrew Houghton 7/5/13
The DC Grays took an early 6-0 lead on Friday, then had to hold off a furious comeback attempt by the last-place FCA Herndon Braves to get the 6-5 win and snap their five game losing streak. The road win moves the Grays to 9-13 on the season. The Grays hadn’t won since June 28th but got off to a good start in this one, scoring twice in the third on Greg Olenski’s (Maryland) two-out, bases loaded single. They scored again in the fourth when Desmond Stegall (Grambling State) tripled and scored on a wild pitch. With starter Mitch Leeds (Lafayette) in control early, the Grays looked to break the game open with three runs in the fifth. Once again, Olenski and Stegall provided the firepower, as each had an RBI single in the frame, giving the Grays a 6-0 lead. But Leeds, who had been cruising with five strikeouts and only one hit allowed through five innings, fell apart in the sixth, hitting the first batter and then giving up five straight hits to the Braves, who tallied four runs before Leeds finally escaped the inning. With the big lead almost gone, manager Arlan Freeman called on reliever Jacob Williams (George Washington) to hold the Braves bats in check. After a 1-2-3 seventh, Williams ran into a little trouble in the eighth, when a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI single got the Braves another run back to make it 6-5. But Williams got the last out to strand a runner in scoring position and hand the ball over to closer Chris Nee (Catholic) for the ninth. The sidearming lefthander quickly introduced some suspense to the proceedings by giving up a leadoff single and then, with one out, making an error on a comebacker to put runners on first and second. A passed ball moved them to second and third but Nee recorded a strikeout on the very same pitch and then induced a groundball to second from the next batter to end the game. The Grays play next on Saturday, July 6th at 7:00 pm against the Presstman Cardinals at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover, Maryland. This game will mark the one month anniversary since the start of the season. Andrew Houghton 7/3/13
The Grays lost their fifth straight game on Wednesday, 2-1 to the Alexandria Aces. Starter Chunner Nyberg (BYU) threw a complete game for the Grays, but the two unearned runs he gave up in the second were enough to seal his fate, as the Grays recorded only five hits against a succession of four Alexandria pitchers. The Grays put up their solitary run with two outs in the sixth when Will Benenson (Franklin and Marshall) singled home Greg Olenski (Maryland), but the next batter Peyton Fuller (Troy University) grounded out with the tying run in scoring position to end the inning. Benenson had two hits for the Grays while Nyberg struck out one and allowed only six baserunners in his eight innings. The game was moved to Hoy Field due to field conditions at Alexandria’s home field, but the Aces remained the home team. The Grays play next on Friday, July 5th at 7:00 pm against the last-place Herndon Braves at Alan McCullock Field in Herndon, VA. |
