The Grays early season winless streak came to an end Wednesday night, as they lost 6-2 to the Alexandria Aces on a humid evening at Hoy Field. The Aces struck early, scoring four in the first off Grays starter Chunner Nyberg (BYU) on two-run singles by DH Nick Collins (Georgetown) and 2B Philip Flach (Samford). The Aces would add two more in the fourth on a bases loaded walk by Collins and an RBI single by C Bobby Burns (Morehead State), but the story of the game was the Aces pitching. Starter Colin Milon (George Washington) and relievers Tyler Brown (Wingate) and Blake Ream (Longwood) combined to allow only three hits with eleven strikeouts. The only runs for the Grays came on a DJ Miller (Delaware State) sacrifice fly in the third and an RBI single by RF Greg Olenski (Maryland) in the ninth. The lone bright spot for the Grays came from bullpen, as Jacob Williams (George Washington), Matt Kilby (Navy), and Yahya Muhammad (Coppin State) held the Aces scoreless following Nyberg’s exit after the fourth. The misfortune for the Grays continued on the injury front, as starting second baseman Jayson Yano (Stevens Tech) left the game in the fifth after he was hit by a baserunner on a stolen base attempt in the previous inning. The Grays play next on Thursday June 13th, taking on the Baltimore Redbirds at Hoy Field at 5:00 pm.
