Saturday’s Grays game against the Herndon Braves was suspended in the tenth inning due to darkness. It will be completed on June 14th before the start of the Grays regularly scheduled game against Herndon (Friday, June 14 5:00pm). At the time of suspension, the game was tied 5-5. The Braves scored four runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead, but an RBI single from Grays catcher Casey Hicks (Gallaudet) in the bottom of the inning sent the game to extras. Mitch Leeds (Lafayette) started the game for the Grays and, although he lacked his best stuff, managed to hold the Braves to one run over five innings, thanks to stellar defense from left fielder Brandon Kiser (Grambling State) and third baseman Bryan DeRosario (Shepherd University). Jayson Yano (Stevens Tech) relieved and pitched three scoreless innings. The great defense for the Grays continued as Yano speared a comeback line drive and doubled off the runner at first to end the sixth. Later, second baseman Cameron Lundmark (Shenandoah University) used his glove to flip a ground ball to first baseman Harrison Farmer to record an out in the eighth. Unfortunately, things fell apart in the ninth as closer Yahya Muhammad (Coppin State) walked the bases full with two outs and a three run lead before giving up a bases-clearing triple to Braves designated hitter Will Young, who would eventually score on left fielder Jon Heisey’s double, giving the Braves a 5-4 lead. However, the Grays would not give up. In the bottom of the ninth. Leadoff hitter Cody Walker (Mississippi State) was hit by a pitch and was bunted over to second before scoring on Hicks’ two out single to left, tying the game. The Braves loaded the bases with no outs in their half of the tenth but a sparkling 5-2-3 double play and a spectacular diving catch by Lundmark in shallow right field kept them off the board. The Grays went quietly in the bottom of the tenth, and it was there that the umpires decided to call the game. The Grays play next on Sunday, June 9th, against the Southern Maryland Nationals at the Nationals home park, Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, MD.
