The Thunderbolts, on the other hand, were able to take advantage of the Grays’ errors to score four runs and beat the Grays 4-1. The Grays’ only run of the game was scored by DH Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion). He walked with two outs in the top of the first, and 1B Taylor King (Memphis) drove him in on an RBI double to center. The Thunderbolts, however, immediately struck back. Their first batter reached on an error and made it to third after a failed pickoff attempt before scoring on a sacrifice fly. The situation replayed itself in the fourth inning, when another Thunderbolts batter got from first to third on a failed pickoff attempt and then scored. The other two runs were scored on a bases loaded walk and a bases loaded double play. Starting pitcher Layton Dill (East Mississippi CC) was tagged with the loss. Dill threw five complete innings, and gave up four runs on two hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Bailey Spence (Cecil CC) relieved Dill in the top of the sixth after a leadoff double. That runner scored, but Spence gave up no runs or hits and one walk. Ryan Garner (Memphis) pitched the seventh, striking out two and walking three. He gave up no hits or runs. Steve Ghiardi (Millersville) came out for the eighth, and he gave up one hit and struck out one batter. Tonight, the Grays are on the road again to play the Baltimore Redbirds. BY: Anna Dunlavey @annadunlavey The DC Grays had a strong start and a strong finish in last night’s game against the Alexandria Aces. The Grays scored two runs in the bottom of the first, two runs in the bottom of the eighth, and closed out the 4-0 win with three strikeouts in the top of the ninth. The home win brings the Grays’ record to 6-4 on the season. CF Kane Hassan (St. Mary’s) got the offense started for the Grays in the bottom of the first with a walk. He then stole second and was driven home on Scott Sanders’ (Southeastern Louisiana) single. Sanders scored on singled to right, and Hassan beat the throw to the plate to score the first run of the game. Sanders scored on a two-out single by C Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion). Sinnen was thrown out trying to stretch a single o to a double, closing out the frame. No more runs scored until the bottom of the eighth inning. Meanwhile, Grays hurlers were putting zeroes on the scoreboard. Starting pitcher Dan Jarrell (Washington College) threw for 2.1 innings, giving up two hits and striking out one batter. He left the game in the top of the third in a bases loaded jam, and Marlon Pruitt (Grambling State), usually a late-game reliever, took over on the mound. The Grays got a quick double play to end the inning, and Pruitt pitched for four more solid innings. He gave up one hit, struck out three batters, and got the win. Reid Frazier (Penn State) pitched the eighth, giving up one hit and striking out two. In the bottom of the eighth, the Grays quickly loaded the bases. Sinnen singled, Drew Reid (Harvard) was hit by a pitch, and Lamar Briggs (Jackson State) singled. Although Mike Caputo (Seton Hall) hit into a double play, Sinnen still scored on the play. Then Tony Holton (Jackson State) delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Reid. Enrique Oquendo (Lamar) came in to close the game. He hit one batter, but struck out the side. Tonight, the Grays will play a makeup game against the Silver-Spring Takoma Thunderbolts at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD. The Grays are 5-4 on the season. The Grays pitching shut down the T-Bolts bats. Harry Thomas (UNC Greensboro) pitched six scoreless innings in his first full start of the season–his first start was in last week’s rained-out game against the Gaithersburg Giants. Thomas gave up only two hits and struck out two batters to get the win. Bailey Spence (Cecil CC) took over for Thomas in the seventh inning, and gave up a hit and no runs in his first appearance for the Grays. Will Korosec (Stevens Tech) took the mound in the eighth, but was relieved by Reid Frazier (Penn State) after loading the bases on three walks with no outs. Frazier limited the damage masterfully, inducing a double play (which scored a run) and notching a strikeout. Enrique Oquendo (Lamar) also making his first appearance of the season, pitched the ninth inning. He walked one and struck out one, and allowed no hits or runs. The game was quiet offensively until the third inning, when 2B Drew Reid (Harvard) singled and 3B Taylor King (Memphis) was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt from CF Bryan Baquer (Washington College). Reid scored on an RBI single from RF Tony Holton (Jackson State), and King scored on a single from C Hunter Southerland (Texas Tech). The Grays picked up another run in the fifth, when DH Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) scored Southerland on a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the seventh, the Grays tacked on three more runs. 1B Scott Sanders (Southeast Louisiana) walked, Sinnen singled, and LF Lamar Briggs (Jackson State) walked to load the bases. A single from SS Jackson Kramer (Lafayette) scored both Sanders and Sinnen. Kramer was out on a fielder’s choice in the next at-bat, but Briggs scored on that play. The Grays record is now 4-4 on the season. The Grays got things started with a quick unearned run in the top of the first. CF Bryan Baquer (Washington College) walked to start the game, and then stole second during the next at bat. DH Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) reached base on an error by the first baseman, and Baquer scored all the way from second on the second error of the play, made by the catcher. The Grays did not have the lead for long, however, as one of the Braves hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning. The Grays were down 5-1 in the top of the fourth, when they began to mount a comeback. RF Desmond Stegall (Grambling State) singled, and stole both second and third during LF Lamar Briggs’ (Jackson State) at bat. Briggs also singled. Stegall scored on a single from Baquer, and Briggs scored after 1B Taylor King (Memphis) took a bases loaded walk. The Grays loaded the bases again in the fifth, with C Colton Shaver (Brigham Young), Briggs and Stegall. Baquer singled, scoring Shaver — but that was the Grays’ only tally in that frame. After the Braves scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Grays notched two more unearned runs in the top of the seventh. SS Jackson Kramer (Lafayette) reached first on an error, second on a wild pitch, and third on a passed ball. He scored on a single from Briggs. Stegall, who had gotten on with a walk, scored on a single from 3B Keifer Rawlings (Bucknell). The Grays finally tied the score at seven in the top of the eighth, when King, who had doubled, scored on a single from Shaver. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Braves loaded the bases. Ryan Garner (Memphis) came in to try to get the Grays out of the jam, but a double from the Braves scored two runs and took back the lead. The Grays went out in order in the top of the ninth. Starting pitcher Jarred Scott (Alabama Southern CC) pitched the first two innings, giving up five runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Zack Irwin (East Mississippi CC) came in for relief in the third inning, and pitched the next 5.1 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Today, the Grays will play the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy. Harry Thomas (UNC-Greensboro) is the expected starting pitcher for the Grays. First pitch is set for 1pm |
