GAME RECAP 7-11-2015 By: Anna Dunlavey; @annadunlavey The homestanding Bethesda Big Train brought the DC Grays’ 3-game win streak to a screeching halt last night when they beat them 11-3. The loss puts the Grays’ record at 13-19 on the season. Starting pitcher Maverik Buffo (Brigham Young) started strong, getting two of his four strikeouts on the night in the first inning. The Big Train then took over, scoring two runs in the second inning and one in the third after Buffo’s command betrayed him. Buffo lasted five innings, striking out a total of five batters and giving up the three runs on four hits. Connor Van Hoose (Bucknell), who started against the Big Train the last time the Grays visited Shirley Povich Field, came out in the bottom of the sixth, where the Big Train scored another run on a sacrifice fly. The Grays finally put a run of their own on the board in the top of the seventh. C Colton Shaver (Brigham Young) walked and reached second on a wild pitch. He scored on a single from 3B Keifer Rawlings (Bucknell). LF Lamar Briggs (Jackson State) and 2B Mike Caputo (Seton Hall) both followed with singles to load the bases with one out. The momentum was lost just as quickly as it was gained, however, as SS Jackson Kramer (Lafayette) hit into an inning-ending double play. Bethesda padded its lead in the seventh. Although Van Hoose got the first batter he faced, he gave up two singles and a triple, allowing two more runs to cross the plate. Reid Frazier (Penn State) came in to finish the inning. One of Frazier’s inherited runners scored on an error, and another scored on a passed ball. The score was 8-1 by the end of the inning. The Big Train continued to terrorize Frazier in the eighth, scoring one run on a double and another on a bases loaded walk. Steve Ghiardi (Millersville) took over for Frazier with two outs and the bases loaded. He ended the inning with a strikeout, but not before giving up a bases loaded walk of his own. The Grays finally began to mount a comeback in the top of the ninth. They got two hits and scored two runs. DH Quinn Carpenter (Texas Tech) led off with a single, then stole second. PH Alex Woinski (Lafayette) was hit by a pitch to get two runners on. Kramer singled, scoring Carpenter, and Woinski also came home after a Big Train throwing error. That was, unfortunately, all that the Grays could muster. Today, the Grays will return to the Nationals Youth Academy to play the Rockville Express for the final time this season. Zack Irwin (East Mississippi CC) is the probable starter for the Grays. Coming off a thrilling win last night, the Grays (13-18) will face the Big Train (20-8) ) with Maverik Buffo (BYU) on the mound. Buffo is coming off two quality outings, where he threw eight hitless innings and then had a relief appearance where he went 1.1 with two hits and one earned run. The Big Train will pitch Drew Strotman (St. Mary’s College) who received a loss in his last outing, going 5.1 with four earned runs off nine hits. Location: Shirley Povich Field, 7:30 p.m. GAME RECAP 7-10-2015 By: Anna Dunlavey; @annadunlaveyy Colton Shaver (Brigham Young) was the savior for the DC Grays in last night’s home victory against the Gaithersburg Giants. Shaver got some key outs at first base, hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh, drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth, and took over as pitcher in the top of the ninth to get the save in a 4-3 Grays win. The victory brought the Grays’ record to 13-18 on the season. The Giants were first on the board with a run scored in the top of the third, but the Grays evened things out in the bottom of the inning. 3B Keifer Rawlings (Bucknell) reached on an error and took third on a 2B Mike Caputo (Seton Hall) single. When CF Bryan Baquer (Washington College) hit the ball back towards the pitcher, he was out at first but Rawlings was able to score an unearned run. In the top of the seventh, the Giants got a home run off of the Grays’ starting pitcher Ryan Garner (Memphis) to take the lead back. However, in the bottom of the inning, Shaver, who competed in the TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby last week, finally hit his first homer in a Grays uniform. The ball sailed over the left field fence to the delight of the home crowd. Shaver delivered again in the eighth, after Baquer singled and RF Tony Holton (Jackson State) advanced him with a sacrifice bunt. DH Quinn Carpenter (Texas Tech) was intentionally walked, although that only brought up another power hitter, Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion). Sinnen reached first on an error to foil the Giants’ plans. Instead of an inning ending double play, they had the bases loaded with Shaver, arguably the most powerful hitter of the three, up to bat. Shaver hit into a fielder’s choice, which got Sinnen out but scored Baquer. SS Drew Reid (Harvard) followed Shaver with a single, scoring Carpenter for the insurance run. Southpaw Garner played six complete innings, and gave up two runs on three hits. Garner walked three and struck out three. The win, however, went to Reid Frazier (Penn State), who took over with no outs and one inherited runner in the top of the seventh. Frazier sent the Giants down in order after that, and in the eighth, he gave up no hits and struck out one batter. In the top of the ninth, some controversial calls by the umpires led Frazier to give up a walk and a hit. Shaver moved from first base to the pitcher’s mound with runners on first and second with no outs. Scott Sanders (Southeastern Louisiana) took over Shaver’s post at first. Only one of Shaver’s three inherited runners crossed the plate. He survived a balk call to face just three batters and end the inning with two strikeouts and a putout at first. Tomorrow night the Grays will go to Shirley Povich Field for a matchup with the Bethesda Big Train. Maverik Buffo (Brigham Young) is the probable starting pitcher for the Grays. GAME RECAP 7-9-2015
By: Anna Dunlavey; @annadunlaveyy The DC Grays beat another Baltimore-based team in two days last night, blanking the Baltimore Dodgers 10-0. It was their second shutout win of the season, and the third time they’d reached double digits on the scoreboard. The Grays are now 12-18. The Grays stormed the Dodgers’ Joe Cannon Stadium and erupted with six runs in the top of the first inning on just two hits. CF Bryan Baquer (Washington College) and RF Harrison Bruce (San Francisco) got the game started by reaching on errors. C Colton Shaver (Brigham Young) scored Baquer on a sacrifice fly, P Quinn Carpenter (Texas Tech) walked, and SS Drew Reid (Harvard) drove in Bruce with a double. The bases were then loaded with two outs after 3B Keifer Rawlings (Bucknell) walked. All three of those runners eventually scored. Carpenter crossed the plate after LF Lamar Briggs (Jackson State) drew a bases loaded walk, Reid came home on a single by 2B Mike Caputo (Seton Hall), and Rawlings scored on another bases loaded walk, this time drawn by Baquer. Briggs scored the inning’s final run on a wild pitch. Baquer and Bruce scored again in the fourth inning. Baquer walked once again, and Bruce was hit by a pitch. After 1B Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) also walked to load the bases, the Dodgers changed pitchers. The first batter the new pitcher faced was Shaver, who promptly singled to drive in two runs. Sinnen scored on a wild pitch in the sixth for a little extra insurance. The three pitchers who went out for the Grays all arguably delivered their best performances of the season. Carpenter started and got the win. He gave up one hit through seven innings of work. He sent the Dodgers down in order in all but two innings, where he faced four batters. Carpenter walked two batters and struck out nine. Bailey Spence (Cecil CC) pitched the eighth, giving up no hits or walks and striking out one. Will Korosec (Stevens Institute of Technology) came out for the ninth, and although he gave up a hit and a walk, he finished out the game without letting a run score. The Grays will be back home at the Nationals Youth Academy on Friday night to face the Gaithersburg Giants. Ryan Garner (Memphis) is the Grays’ probable starting pitcher. The Grays (12-18) will come back home today to take on the Gaithersburg Giants (8-18). Tonight’s probable starter is Ryan Garner from the University of Memphis. Garner is coming off a relief appearance against the Express where he gave up two earned runs off two hits. Giants’ starter Taylor Bloom of the University of Maryland (College Park) is coming off a five inning start, giving up two earned runs off four hits. Location: Washington Nationals Youth Academy (3675 Ely Place SE, Washington DC), at 7 p.m. Fresh off a win against league leading Baltimore Redbirds, the Grays (11-18) will face the Baltimore Dodgers (9-18) with Quinn Carpenter (Texas Tech) on the mound. Carpenter is coming off a 6.2 outing with one earned run on seven hits against the Bethesda Big Train. Location: Joe Cannon Stadium, 7 p.m. GAME RECAP 7-8-2015
By: Anna Dunlavey; @annadunlaveyy The DC Grays got a rain soaked win last night, capitalizing on some uncharacteristically sloppy play by the visiting Baltimore Redbirds. The Grays beat the defending Ripken League champs 5-3, and are now 11-18 on the season. RF Harrison Bruce (University of San Francisco) started his first game with the Grays last night, and scored his first run in the first inning. After walking to get on base, he scored from first on an error by the left fielder. C Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) backed Bruce up with a run scored on a wild pitch in the third. The Redbirds scored to cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the sixth, 3B Keifer Rawlings (Bucknell) walked to bring up 2B Mike Caputo (Seton Hall). Caputo laid down a great bunt, and reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher. Rawlings scored on the play. Caputo then scored after Bruce hit into a fielder’s choice. SS Drew Reid (Harvard) scored the game’s final run in the top of the seventh. He reached second on an error and scored from third on a wild pitch. Harry Thomas (UNC-Greensboro) got his third win of the season after pitching 6.2 innings. He gave up two runs on six hits, struck out four batters, and walked one. Maverik Buffo (Brigham Young) came on in relief for 1.1 innings. Buffo gave up two hits and a run, and struck out two batters. Enrique Oquendo (Lamar) got the save after pitching a stellar ninth, striking out all three batters he faced. Tonight, the Grays will travel to Baltimore to face the league’s other Baltimore-based team, the Baltimore Dodgers. Tonight, the DC Grays (10-18) will take on frontrunners of the North division, the Baltimore Redbirds (20-6). Zach Irwin of East Mississippi CC will take the mound. Irwin is coming off a 4-3 win, going seven innings with three earned runs off eight hits. The Redbirds will pitch Jason Morgan of UNC Chapel Hill. Morgan is coming off a five inning win allowing just two hits. Location: Washington Nationals Youth Academy at 7 p.m. |
