The DC Grays went to Frank Mann field in Virginia to take on the league leading Alexandria Aces. The Grays were able to capture the lead in the fourth inning and hold on to win by a score of 5-4.
Michael Sills (Wofford) was the starting pitcher for the Grays and he was able to pitch six innings, only giving up two runs and striking out six. The Grays fell behind by one after the first inning, but they were able to score two in the fourth to take the lead. Hits from James Layman (Wofford) and Matt Colella (Lafayette) set up Michael Lavanga (William & Mary) for an RBI groundout. After a walk, Anthony Ruocco (Winthrop) hit an RBI single to drive in Colella. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Matt Colella was able to drive in Dan Leikus (Rhode Island) to make the score 3-1. Back to back doubles by Greg Marmo (George Washington) and James Layman scored another in the seventh and an Ellis Reid (North Carolina A&T) RBI single drove in Brady Steinert (Marist). Derek Desmarais (Tufts) only gave up one hit over his three innings, earning the save. The win brought the Grays to 11-12 and in sole possession of second place in the southern division. The Grays will look to extend their lead over the South County Braves when they host them tomorrow at PGCC field at 5 pm.

The DC Grays hosted the Southern Maryland Senators in a southern division matchup in the Cal Ripken league. Both teams were looking to climb back up the rankings in the league and the Senators were able to get the victory, 9-5.
The Grays had an early lead in the first inning when Michael Lavanga (William & Mary) drove in Matt Colella (Lafayette) with a single. Ryder Moye (Wofford) was the starter for the Grays tonight, going four innings while striking out three. He gave up four runs in each of the third and fourth innings, none of them being earned. Matt Leikus (James Madison) pitched the fifth through eighth innings in his second straight day of work, giving up an unearned run of his own. The Grays started the comeback effort in the third when Matt Colella (Lafayette) doubled to lead off the inning. He would score on a sacrifice fly by Brady Steinert (Marist), his second run of the game. Leading off the fourth inning, Manoah Chapman (San Diego State) hit a solo home run, which made the score 8-3. Pinch hitting in the ninth, Greg Marmo (George Washington) hit a two-RBI single to center field. But it was proven to be too little, too late for the Grays as the game would finish with a score of 9-5. Even with the loss, the Grays remain tied for second place in the southern division, only behind the cruising Alexandria Aces. The Grays will take on the Aces again tomorrow at 6 pm at Frank Mann field. The DC Grays traveled to Olney on Thursday to take on the Cropdusters in a Cal Ripken League matchup. The Grays, backed by a strong start and big third inning, were able to beat the Cropdusters 4-1.
Jake Roberti (George Mason) toed the rubber for the Grays in his fourth start of the year. Besides a solo homerun in the second, Roberti was able keep the Cropdusters at bay, striking out six in his six innings of work. The Grays offense was able to get the lead in the third on back to back doubles by Brady Steinert (Marist) and Ellis Reid (North Carolina A&T) scored three runs. The score held at 3-1 until the eighth inning when Elias Owens (Washington & Jefferson) hit a solo homerun on the first strike he saw. It was Owens’ first homerun of the year and the Grays fifth of the season. The Grays were able to hold the three run lead with the bullpen duo of Derek Desmarais (Tufts) and Matt Leikus (James Madison), the latter of which recorded the save. The win takes the Grays to 10-11, keeping pace with the South County Braves in the division. The Grays will be back in action on Friday, June 28th, when the last place Senators visit Prince George’s Community College. The Grays entered South County 9-9, in second place of the southern division. They took on the South County Braves, who were a game behind them in the standings. Despite a rally in the ninth inning, the Braves held on to beat the Grays 8-6.
Tyler Kelly (William & Mary) got the start for the Grays and gave up five runs over 4.1 innings of work. After falling behind by three following the second inning, the Grays got two runs back in the top of the fourth. Ellis Reid (North Carolina A&T) started the inning with a solo shot to right center field and three more hits, ending with a Matt Colella (Lafayette) double, scoring the second run for the Grays. The Braves were able to respond, with runs in each of the next three innings, sending them into the ninth with a comfortable 8-2 lead. A hit by pitch, walk, and error loaded the bases for the Grays in the ninth, when back to back walks cut the lead to four. After a pitching change, Elias Owens (Washington & Jefferson) drove in two more runs with a single. That is all the Grays could muster though, as the rally stopped on a strikeout to end the game. The loss brings the Grays into a tie with the Braves for second place in the southern division at 9-10 each. Come out to Prince George’s Community College Wednesday, June 26th when the Big Train visit the Grays. The DC Grays looked to get back into the win column against the league leading Alexandria Aces. The Grays were able to get ahead big early and they held on to win 9-2. The win brought the Grays back up to .500 as they look to get rolling going into the second half.
Champ Davis (Wofford) was the starter for the Grays and he gave up one run in the top of the first inning on an RBI forceout. The Grays got three runs back in the home half of the inning when Michael Lavanga (William & Mary) hit a double that scored Matt Colella (Lafayette). The next batter, with a full count, Greg Marmo (George Washington) hit a two-run home run that extended the lead to 3-0. In the second inning, Anthony Ruocco (Winthrop), hit a two run double that gave the Grays some insurance runs and a Joey Wilga (Richmond) three-run home run in the third gave Champ Davis a comfortable lead. Davis settled in after the first and was able to finish seven innings with seven strikeouts. The Grays added one more in the eighth on Lavanga’s second double of the game. The Grays remain in second place in the southern division at 9-9 and third overall in the CRBL. DC will be back in action on June 25th at South County High School when they will play the third place Braves. The DC Grays were back in action tonight against the Southern Maryland Senators after a two day hiatus. Backed by a strong outing from Tyler Kelly (William & Mary), the Grays won the game by a score of 4-2.
Kelly was able to toss six innings of two run ball, while lowering his ERA to 2.84. Kelly has been great so far this season, striking out twelve batters to only four walks over nineteen innings of work. The Grays gave the pitching staff some run support early, scoring all four runs in the first three innings. After a Matt Colella (Lafayette) single to lead off the game, Michael Lavanga (William & Mary) drove home a run with a single. The Grays were able to continue their hot start when Joey Wilga (Richmond) scored on a wild pitch in the second. Lavanga drove home his second and third runs of the game in the third on a double that scored James Layman (Wofford) and Brady Steinert (Marist). Champ Davis (Wofford) was able to shut down the Senators for the last three innings. The righty was making his fourth appearance of the year, continuing his streak of no free passes over the new season. The win brings the Grays to one game below .500, at 7-8. The Grays will play the Cropdusters at PGCC field tomorrow at 5 pm. It will be their second of five straight games. The DC Grays took on the Cropdusters on June 17th, looking to avoid a five game losing streak. Behind strong pitching and a big offensive inning, the Grays were able to beat Cropdusters 13-3.
Jay Aghanya (Oberlin) took the mound in the first for the Grays and was able to go five innings and only gave up three runs. The Grays were able to get the lead in the second, when Ellies Reid (North Carolina A&T) scored Matt Colella (Lafayette) who doubled to lead off the inning. The fourth inning brought in nine runs for the Grays, which was started when Cameron Simms (Neuman) drew a bases loaded walk. Elias Owens (Washington & Jefferson) drove in two more runs with a single and James Layman (Wofford) extended the lead to 6-1 after his RBI hit. Colella and Joey Wilga (Richmond) each drove in two runs apiece which was enough to go into the fifth with a nine run lead. The bullpen combination of Corey Savedoff (Lafayette), Patrick Brizendine (William & Mary), and Will Stambaugh (Lock Haven) was able to hold the Cropdusters hitless over the last five innings of the game. Matt Colella collected four hits in the match while Brady Steinert (Marist) had three of his own. Fourteen hits and seven walks led the Grays to their highest run total of the season, as they exploded for thirteen runs. The win puts the Grays at 6-8, four games back from the lead in the southern division. The next game will be at home against the Senators on June 20th when the Grays look to take sole possession of second place in the division. The Grays went around the beltway to Gaithersburg, MD to take on the Giants. In a back and forth matchup, the Giants were able to edge out the Grays by a score of 7-6. The loss made it three in a row and set the Grays record to 5-7. Champ Davis (Wofford) was the starting pitcher for the Grays and he went six innings, giving up five runs. The Grays were down 5-0 after two innings, but Davis was able to hold the Giants scoreless for the next four innings. A big fifth inning cut the Giants lead to one after Anthony Ruocco scored Griffin Cooley (LSU) and Ellis Reid (North Carolina A&T) and a Patrick Neihus (Gardner Webb) double scored Matt Colella (Lafayette) and Ruocco. The Grays tied the game in the sixth when Griffin Cooley drove in Manoah Chapman (San Diego State) who singled to start the rally. The next batter, Charlie Femlee (Delaware State) captured the lead for the Grays when he singled home a run. The Giants were able to take the game back in the seventh off of Michael Sills (Wofford) when Aiden Robbins (Seton Hall) hit a two run home run. The Grays will be back in action Sunday, June 16th where they will play the Big Train at Shirley Povich field at 7 pm. The Grays are looking for their second win against Bethesda this season and to snap a three game skid. The Grays returned home for a matchup with the Thunderbolts on Friday night. The Bolts were able to rack up fifteen hits on their way to a 8-3 victory over the Grays. The loss sent the Grays back under .500 and was their second loss in a row.
Tyler Kelly (William & Mary) was the starting pitcher for the Grays and he came into the game having thrown nine scoreless innings to start the season. His outing went four innings, getting taken out after seven hits and five runs. The Grays scored two runs when Greg Marmo (George Washington) drove in James Layman (Wofford) and Patrick Niehus (Gardner Webb) singled home Anthony Ruocco (Winthrop). The Grays had four batters record multiple hits, with Niehus leading the way with three including a double. Marmo, Ruocco, and Joey Wilga (Richmond) each had two hits apiece, with Ruocco and Wilga adding extra base hits. Will Stambaugh (Lock Haven) came in relief of Kelly and threw five innings of three run ball to finish the game. The Grays will play the Gaithersburg Giants on Saturday, June 15th, looking to get back to .500. At 5-6, the Grays are tied with the Senators at the bottom of the southern division. But at only two games back, the division is still up for grabs. The Grays went on the road for a meeting with the Braves Thursday evening. The Grays entered the day at 5-4, while the Braves were 4-5. Behind eight home runs, the Braves were able to outscore the Grays 16-2.
The Braves started the scoring early, scoring nine runs in the first two innings. The ten hits, five home runs, off of the starter Corey Savedoff (Lafayette) ended his outing after two innings. The Grays got two back in the third, when Ellis Reid (North Carolina A&T) led off the inning with a triple. Cameron Simms (Neuman) scored Reid the next batter with a single to left field. With two outs, Patrick Niehus (Gardner Webb) doubled home Simms to bring the score to 9-2. After Michael Sills (Wofford) held the Braves scoreless for two innings, Jamie Laskofski (William & Mary) and Cole Nathan (Carson-Newman) hit back to back home runs off of the new Grays pitcher. Another home run in the eighth brought the lead to fourteen where it would be for the remainder of the game. At 5-5, the Grays are tied with the Braves at second in the southern division and remain a game back of the Aces. The Grays will be back home at PGCC field Friday, June 14th at 5 pm when they take on the SS-T Thunderbolts. |
