A furious late rally wasn’t enough to save the day for the DC Grays.  The visiting Silver Spring Takoma Thunderbolts built a 10-4 lead after six innings, then withstood a five run eighth inning by the home team and held off the Grays for a 10-9 win.

The win gave the T-Bolts a two game playoff series sweep of the Grays. They move on to play the Bethesda Big Train for the Ripken League championship.

Several Grays had big nights at the plate.  DH Josh Congdon (Wofford) had his biggest game of the season with four hits and an RBI, and 3B Robby Wacker (Richmond) had three hits, including a key single in the eighth to punctuate the Grays’ big rally.  LF Noah Searcey (Georgia Southern) has one hit and an RBI to go with two walks.

On the mound, Grays starter P Frank Craska (Lafayette) avoided big innings but still surrendered single runs in each inning he pitched.  P Magnus Ellerts (Harford CC) struggled in relief of Craska, allowing the T-Bolts to pad their lead.  P Jacob Hardney (Marymount) calmed the waters in his 2.2 innings of relief, and P Jarren Norman (Virginia State) pitched a scoreless ninth.

The loss brings to a close the Grays’ 2019 season – a season that saw the team notch its first ever playoff win, but ultimately ended a few games short of the ultimate goal of a Ripken League championship.
