The DC Grays are off to a great start for the 2015 season, winning their first game on the road against the Herndon Braves 6-2. Starting pitcher Layton Dill (East Mississippi CC/Mississippi State) got off to a great start and just missed getting the win as he went 4.2 innings before loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth were Connor Van Hoose (Bucknell) came in to hold the Braves at two runs for two innings on the mound while Reid Frazier (Penn State) and Zach Irwin (East Mississippi CC/Ole Miss) closed out the last 3 innings.

Out of the eight total runs scored in the game, only one was earned. The Braves got the early lead, scoring once in the second inning and once in the third. However, the Grays bounced back in the fourth to score their first four runs of the game.

Tony Holton (Jackson State) started the top of the fourth with a single, then stole second and continued to third on an error by the catcher. Scott Sanders (Southeast Louisiana) singled to get him home. Sanders then scored on a double from Hunter Southerland (Texas Tech), who came home on a hit from Jackson Kramer (Lafayette).

In the top of the seventh, Kane Hassan (St. Mary’s-CA) got on base after an error by the third baseman, and scored on a double from Sanders. The only earned run in the game came in the top of the ninth, when Sanders, who had singled, scored his second run of the game on a wild pitch. Designated hitter Sanders was the Grays’ top producer at the plate. He went 3-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.

The Grays are on the road again tonight, playing the Silver Spring/Takoma Thunderbolts at Montgomery Blair High School. Dan Jarrell (Washington College) is the Grays’ expected starting pitcher. The Grays’ home opener will be this Saturday at 7PM at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.
