SILVER SPRING, MD – – The DC Grays entered uncharted territory when they traveled to Silver Spring on Friday to begin the semifinal round of the Ripken League playoffs against the T-Bolts. DC had never made it this far in the Ripken League playoffs, and the two teams played a game worthy of post-season play. An untimely error cost the Grays the game in the bottom of the ninth 2-1.
Normally sure-handed SS Justin Johnson (Lafayette) misplayed a hard hit grounder with two outs and a runner on third in the ninth, allowing the winning run to score and sending the home fans home happy. Game two will take place Saturday night at 7pm at the Nationals Youth Academy, with the Grays facing elimination.
It was a quiet offensive night for both clubs, with only nine hits total between the two teams. The Grays sole run came in the fourth inning as 3B Blake Martin (Southern) scored on a sac fly. LF Noah Searcy (Georgia Southern) had a solid night, going two-for-three with a pair of base hits and a walk.
The Grays pitching was solid. The combination of Jake Lewis (Eastern Kentucky) and Bryce Ross (Southern) allowed two runs (only one earned) on four hits with seven walks with seven strikeouts. Lewis started and went five innings and Ross pitched the last three and two-thirds.
