The DC Grays’ bats were as hot as the weather Saturday night, as they hammered the visiting Alexandria Aces 12-5 in the first game of the scheduled doubleheader. The Grays are now 14-12 on the season, in second place in the Ripken League.
At the plate, two players shined under the sun. OF Matthew Day (Coppin St) went 3-4 on the night with a jaw-dropping eight RBI’s. Day had a grand slam in the second inning and a triple in the third, keeping the Grays in the game after Alexandria jumped to an early lead, and then giving them the lead. Alongside Day was IF Robbie Wacker (Richmond) going 2-2 with two walks, a two-run home run and a double. Wacker had two RBI’s and scores four times. The Grays drew nine walks and had seven hits.
Grays’ starting pitcher P Isaac Olson (Cincinnati) had a rough outing, allowing five runs with six walks and two hits allowed. However, those were the only runs the Grays pitching staff allowed. In relief, P Jacob Hardney (Marymount) came in and was lights out. Hardney went three innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Beginning in the fifth inning, P Bryce Ross (Southern), P Tyler Gault (Notre Dame) and P/INF Austin Deming (BYU) each tossed a scoreless inning to close out the seven inning contest.
The Grays need to give fewer walks in the future, as they had 13 tonight.
The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather and will be played at a later time. The Grays travel to Gaithersburg on Sunday to take on the Giants, where they will continue the game from July 2nd, picking up in the fourth inning, and then playing a full game after that.
