The DC Grays have been proud members of the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League since 2012. With eight teams in Maryland, DC and Northern Virginia, the Ripken League is one of the top summer wood-bat leagues in America, with dozens of players drafted and signed by MLB teams each year. The Collegiate Summer Baseball Register annually ranks the Ripken League one of the best collegiate summer leagues. For more information on the Ripken League, go to www.calripkenleague.org

Since 2016, DC Grays Baseball has been running a youth baseball/softball program for underserved kids in Washington. Our goal is to make baseball and softball more accessible to more kids – regardless of ability to pay. Our DC Grays MVP program includes travel baseball and softball teams across multiple age groups, as well as a coed “house” summer baseball league. Each year, DC Grays MVP baseball and softball teams represent Washington in local and regional tournaments, including the Metropolitan Junior Baseball League (MJBL) championships in Richmond. (The photo at left is our 12U team from 2022.) All DC Grays MVP programs are completely FREE to all participants.

GRAYS MISS PLAYOFFS, BUT ALL-LEAGUE PLAYERS SHINE
The DC Grays finished the season with a record of 14-22 – two games out of a playoff spot in the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League. While the results on the field didn’t measure up to the pre-season expectations, several players had terrific seasons for manager Maurice Bankston’s club.
The strength of the this edition of the Grays was on the mound, where three DC hurlers were among the Ripken League leaders in various pitching categories. Not coincidentally, all three were named to the All-Ripken League team.
Michael Sills (Wofford) had the lowest ERA in the Ripken League at 2.20. He posted a record of 2-1 in 28.2 innings, with 31 strikeouts. He was the only Gray named first team All-League.
Jake Roberti (George Mason) was a staff workhorse and strikeout artist. He lead the team with 38 innings pitched and 39 strikeouts (fifth in the Ripken League), posting a 3-1 record for the season with a 3.55 ERA (sixth in the Ripken League.
James Layman (Wofford) played well defensively all around the infield for the Grays, and was the top offensive performer for the team. Batting near the top of the order, he lead the team with a .340 batting average (good for eight in the league) with seven RBI and eight steals.
Matt Colella (Lafayette) played mostly second base and shortstop, and batted .333 on the season with 13 RBI and six steals. In the field, he had good range and a strong arm.
Sills was named to the All-Ripken League first team, while Roberti, Layman and Colella was named to the second team.

Ambassadors for Baseball
A member of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, the DC Grays are named in honor of the Negro League champion Homestead Grays. The DC Grays are one of the only summer college baseball teams that actively recruit African-American ballplayers, and our goal is to support baseball and softball in the inner-city.
The Grays are run by DC Grays Baseball, the all-volunteer non-profit organization that also oversees DC Grays MVP - a youth baseball and softball program targeted to underserved areas of the nation's capital. DC Grays MVP sponsors travel teams and house leagues in baseball and softball. All participation in DC Grays MVP is FREE to all participants.
