Morris Leads Grays to Shutout Victory Over Thunderbolts
After nearly a week off due to rain and unplayable field conditions, the DC Grays returned to action on Friday night with a dominant 7–0 win over the Silver Spring–Takoma Thunderbolts. Although the game was originally scheduled to be played in Silver Spring, the teams faced off at Woodbridge High School, home of the Grays, due to poor field conditions at the T-Bolts' home field.
Ty Morris (Marist) was untouchable on the mound, going six strong innings and striking out nine while allowing just four hits and no runs. He kept the Thunderbolts off balance all night with a sharp mix of pitches, helping the Grays record their first shutout of the summer.
The game remained scoreless through the first four innings, until the Grays broke through in the top of the fifth. Ethan Nagy (Lock Haven) got things started with a single up the middle, followed by a walk from Carter Jenkins (Nicholls State). Joey Chitla (Wofford) then reached on an error by the right fielder, allowing both runners to score and put the Grays on top 2–0. With Chitla on third, Marc Quarrie (Wofford) drilled a triple off the left field fence, making it 3–0. Quarrie later scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4–0.
Quarrie continued his big night with a 103 mph single in the seventh, and the Grays tacked on another run when Rocco Gilbert (Alabama State) ripped a two-RBI double down the right field line in the ninth. Gilbert's hit capped off a key pinch-hit appearance following a walk by Noel Rivera (Marist) and a single from pinch-hitter Dixon Monk (Georgetown).
On the mound, the bullpen took care of business after Morris exited. Alex Bergan (Gettysburg) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning with two strikeouts, and Jamie Whittier (Wofford) closed the door in the ninth. A double play turned by Noel Rivera helped erase a scoring threat before Whittier finished it with a groundout to first.
The Grays now sit at 5–4 with a .556 win percentage. They'll look to keep the momentum going as they travel to face the Alexandria Aces on Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30
p.m.
