Lights out pitching leads Grays
After the Grays won a slugfest on Sunday afternoon, the DC pitching staff decided to be a little bit stingier on Monday night. DC hurlers Owen Basso (Lafayette), Dean Qira (Stevens Institute), Drew Norton (Dickinson) and Sam Moseman (NYU) combined for a one-hitter against the Gaithersburg Giants on Monday night in Woodbridge, leading the Grays to a 6-1 win. The Grays are now 7-5, while the Giants dripped to 3-11.
DC struck first, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first and effectively putting the game away. A couple of singles from Noel Rivera (Marist) and Ryan Soong (WASHU) gave Carter Jenkins (Nicholls State) the opportunity to drive in two runs with a single. The Grays continue to press the attack with Joey Chitla (Wofford) singling to left to tack on two more. Jack McMullan (Liberty) added on with a single and an RBI.
Basso worked four relatively stress-free innings in his best outing of the season. A few hit batters and a sacrifice fly gave the Giants their only run of the night in the fourth. The Grays got the run right back with a sacrifice fly to deep right center from Marc Quarrie (Wofford), scoring Andrew Ruggeri (Penn) who had walked and headed to third on an errant throw from the catcher. The sacrifice put the Grays up 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
Qira and Norton put together one scoreless inning each, and Moseman kept things quiet the rest of the way, allowing one hit and working three scoreless innings to seal the win.
The Grays currently sit in second in the South Division standings with a record of 7-5. They travel to Olney on Tuesday to take on the Cropdusters at 5:30pm.
