Grays beat the heat - and the Cropdusters

On a scorching hot Tuesday evening, the DC Grays were rude guests. They defeated the homestanding Olney Cropdusters 7-3.
The Grays got the bats moving early in the game. Noel Rivera (Marist) led off the game with a base hit to right field. Marc Quarrie (Wofford) followed that with his own base hit to left. Rivera swiped third base, then scored on a double steal to give DC a 1-0 lead.
The Grays weren't done. Andy Rivera (Holy Family) was hit by a pitch. Luke Caucci (Lafayette) drove in Quarrie and Rivera on a double, extending the lead to 3-0.
Quarrie got the Grays going again in the top of the third, picking up a leadoff single before Ethan Nagy (Lock Haven) walked. Caucci then ripped a ball down the left field line to get his third and fourth RBIs of the game and DC had a 5-0 lead. The Cropdusters picked up a run in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 5-1.
After Brady Myers (Lock Haven) twirled four impressive innings for DC - giving up one run on just two hits - AJ Thomas (Marist) came onto the mound for the top of the fifth inning and promptly struck out the side.
By the sixth inning, the already oppressive heat had gotten even worse. The umpires wisely required five-minute water breaks at the top of each inning for player safety.
The Grays tacked on runs in the seventh and eighth innings - including yet another RBI for Caucci, which gave him five for the game.
Alex Bergen closed out the game on the mound for DC. He notched four innings of two-run relief, walking one and striking out three.
The Grays are 4-1 since returning from their week-long weather hiatus and are riding a three-game winning streak heading into Wednesday's game against the Southern Maryland Senators in Waldorf. The Grays are now 8-5 and in second-place in the South Division of the Ripken League.
