Grays Season Ends in Tight Battle
The Grays season came to an end last night as they lost in the playoffs, 3-2, to the Southern Maryland Senators.
The Senators scored first in the bottom of the second on a passed ball after loading the bases. The Grays came right back in the top of the third on a sac fly from Tanner Wolpert (Franklin & Marshall). A string of hits from the Senators gave them a one-run lead in the bottom of the third, but a spectacular Andy Rivera (Holy Family) throw to the plate prevented them from adding on.
Great defensive plays like a running over-the-shoulder catch by Tyler Wiltsey (Rutgers) kept the score at 2-1 until a passed ball in the top of the sixth scored Andy Rivera (Holy Family) to tie the game at 2-2. Colin Casey (Randolph Macon) held down the Senators for 3.1 innings, only allowing one hit and picking up 4 strikeouts along the way. Joey Chitla (Wofford) also made a fine defensive play to keep the game tied as he leaped to snag a ball for the third out of the eighth inning. Joe Marini (Seton Hall) led the offense for the Grays, going 3-3 on the night with a double, two singles, and three walks.
The game came down to the ninth inning. The Grays were unable to score in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs and a man on first due to a hit by pitch and the count full, a fastball was driven to the left field fence, scoring the runner from first. The Grays' remarkable run thus ended in a 3-2 loss.
Thank you Grays fans for following and supporting our journey this season. Thank you also to our host families, interns, coaches, directors, and players for a great season. See you next summer!
