Grays Lose Home Opener in a Back and Forth Contest
By: Ethan Wentworth
The Grays fought hard in a back and forth battle, but fell short, losing 9-4 to the Metro South County Braves.
The Game of the Week for the Cal Ripken League started off as a defensive one, with both teams holding each other scoreless the first two innings. This stalemate ended with the Braves scoring to lead 1-0 in the 3rd inning.
The Grays would respond strong in the 4th inning, scoring runs off of a Jackson Stallworth (Pensacola State) ground ball resulting in an overthrow to first, scoring Peyton Ford (U Cal of Penn) and Ryan Stoddard (Lafayette) to take the lead for the Grays.
The 5th inning saw both teams trading runs, with the Braves tying the game at 2-2 in the top of the inning. The Grays took the lead back to end the 5th on a single from Ryan Stoddard (Lafayette), with a Braves fielding error resulting in Aaron Rowell (Pensacola State) scoring a run to go up 3-2.
The next couple of innings saw the Braves take a lead that they would never renounce with 3 runs in the 6th, 1 in the 7th, and another 3 in the 8th to go up 9-3.
The Grays wouldn't go down easy however, as they were able to score another run after a single from Joey Chitla (William & Mary) drove in Jackson Stallworth (Pensacola State). The Grays' late game momentum would unfortunately stop there, as they were defeated 9-4 in their home opener.
The Grays look to bounce back at home 6/5 against the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts at 7PM at Robert J. Talbot Field.
