Late Grays Rally Falls Just Short in 10-8 Loss to Aces
By: Ethan Wentworth
The Grays had a solid comeback effort in Alexandria, but were ultimately defeated by the Aces 10-8.
The Grays started this game off very strong on offense, scoring 2 runs immediately in the first inning. These runs came off an Ethan Fox-Fernandez (Vassar) ground out to score Beny Bikar Jr. (Southern) and a Peyton Ford (Cal. U PA) single to score Jackson Stallworth (Pensacola State).
The Aces would have a huge second inning, scoring 4 runs to take the lead 4-2 in the frame. The Grays would respond in the third inning, with Peyton Ford (Cal. U PA) scoring due to a wild pitch. The Aces would then regain momentum in quick fashion, scoring 2 runs in the fourth inning and 3 in the fifth to go up 9-3.
The Grays didn't let this stretch demoralize them, as they scored 2 runs in the sixth inning, with one being an error allowing Carter Sweeney-Strawberry (Rutgers) to get to the plate and Keegan McGraw (Chatham) scoring the other off a wild pitch.
The Grays continued this comeback with another two runs both coming off a double from Joey Chitla (William & Mary) to score Carter Sweeney-Strawberry (Rutgers) and Aaron Rowell (Pensacola State) to cut the lead to 2. The Aces rebounded in the bottom of the seventh inning by scoring another run, and both teams were scoreless in the eighth.
The Grays went into the ninth inning down 10-7 but had the chance to complete the comeback they'd had throughout the game. The Grays would score to cut into the lead via an Ethan Fox-Fernandez (Vassar) walk with bases loaded to score Jackson Loomis (Denison).
Unfortunately the Grays wouldn't be able to capitalize on these loaded bases and would be defeated 10-8 in Alexandria.
The loss did contain some positive individual performances, with Joey Chitla (William & Mary) leading the way again for the Grays, driving in 3 RBIs on only 1 hit and having a walk. Peyton Ford (Cal. U PA) also had a big game, hitting 2-4, scoring a run, driving in a RBI, and earning a walk as well.
The Grays have their next game 6/18 against the SS-T Thunderbolts at 7PM at Montgomery Blair Stadium and look to get back in the win column.
