Stallworth's Grand Slam Sparks Grays' 9-8 Comeback Win
By: Ethan Wentworth
The Grays were able to get a huge comeback win with a surge of late game hitting to bring them to a 9-8 score against the Gaithersburg Giants in the first game of their double header at Robert J. Talbot Field.
This game started off shaky for the Grays, with the Giants scoring 1 run in the first, 1 in the second, and 4 in the third to get to a quick 6-0 lead. The Grays' comeback would begin in the third inning, with their first 2 runs coming off a Jackson Stallworth (Pensacola State) double to score Joey Chitla (William & Mary) and Parker Shenman (Catholic).
The Grays would continue their quick comeback in the fourth inning with them scoring 5 more runs. The first of these runs would come off a Peyton Ford (Cal. U PA) single to score Keegan Mcgraw (Chatham) and keep the bases loaded. Jackson Stallworth (Pensacola State) would send an absolute rocket into right center 419 feet for the Grays' best play of the season yet on a grand slam to take the lead 8-6 in the fourth.
The Giants would cut the lead in half in the sixth inning before the Grays would put in Ryan Stoddard (Lafayette) to close the game with a 1 run lead and bases loaded. The Giants would tie the game going into the bottom of the sixth with all the pressure being on the Grays to take the lead and win at home.
The Grays would take the lead on an Aaron Rowell (Pensacola State) double to score his college teammate Jackson Stallworth (Pensacola State) and Stoddard (Lafayette) was able to get the save for the 9-8 win, only allowing 1 hit in his performance.
Jackson Stallworth (Pensacola State) had an unbelievable game, hitting 3-4, scoring 3 runs, and driving in 6 RBIs in a monster offensive performance. Peyton Ford (Cal. U PA) also had a good performance, having a huge diving catch early in the game as well as going 1-3 at the plate, scoring a run, and driving in a RBI.
The Grays have their next game 6/20 at 7PM in the second game of their double-header against the Giants and look to add to their win streak at Robert J. Talbot Field.
