Grays Strong Hitting Day Leads to Road Win
By: Ethan Wentworth
The Grays had a huge game at the plate which led to a 9-6 win against Southern Maryland.
This game started out extremely defensive, with neither team being able to get on the board in the first 2 innings. Evan Wilson (Richmond) was the one to get the Grays in the scoring column, going yard to score both him and Jackson Loomis (Denison).
The Grays defense started this game extremely well, not allowing any runs in the first 5 innings. The Grays would increase their lead in the sixth frame, with Carter Sweeney-Strawberry (Rutgers) scoring off an error and Ben Drinkwine (North Carolina Wilmington) scoring on a passed ball.
The Senators would bounce back quickly and score 5 runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. The Grays' bats would come out firing in the seventh frame however. They'd first score both Jackson Loomis (Denison) and Hartley Rahaman (Catawba) on a Carter Sweeney-Strawberry (Rutgers) single to retake the lead.
The Grays would continue this hot streak and would score Sweeney-Strawberry (Rutgers) on a single from Ben Drinkwine (North Carolina Wilmington). Drinkwine (UNCW) would then be scored on a single from Drew Rybinski (Georgetown), with the Senators scoring a run in the bottom of the inning, bringing the Grays to a 8-6 lead going into the final 2 innings of the game.
The Grays would get clutch time started on a great note, with Hartley Rahman (Catawba) sending the ball over the right center for his first homer on the season. This would be the last run the Grays would score on the game, meaning it'd be up to reliever Caden Brown (Southern) to get the save for the Grays.
Brown(Southern) would deliver big time and only allow 1 hit and punch in 3 strikeouts to get the save and secure the 9-6 win for the Grays on the road.
The Grays had a great hitting game today, racking up 13 hits and 2 home runs. Evan Wilson (Richmond) had another stellar hitting game, going 2-5 and hitting a 2 run homer in the third inning. Hartley Rahman (Catawba) also had an awesome performance, hitting 2-5, scoring 2 runs and hitting a solo homer in the eighth inning to ice the game. Jackson Loomis (Denison) had a solid day, going 2-5 at the plate and scoring 2 runs.
The Grays look to extend this win into their next game against the Metro South County Braves 6/9 at 5PM at South County High School.
