Grays Rally from Four-Run Deficit to Defeat Senators 7-4
By: Ethan Wentworth
The Grays were able to battle back after going down early to the Senators to win 7-4 at Robert J. Talbot Field behind phenomenal pitching and timely hitting.
This game started off less than ideal for the Grays, with them letting up 4 runs in the 1st inning. After this frame, starter Brayden Spurgeon (Washington) would settle in and only allow 1 hit and deliver 3 strikeouts in the next 3 innings.
The Grays offense would heat up off the impressive pitching in these innings, with Freeman Hunt (Dickinson) scoring Peyton Ford (U Cal. of Penn) and Xavier Bradley (Southern) on a double in the 2nd.
The Grays offense kept finding ways to score, with Travis Church (Marist) scoring in the 5th on a throw to 2nd by the catcher. Mason Weaver (Wofford) would come into the game for the 6th inning and would have an absolute masterclass. He'd throw 2.2 innings in which he'd allow only 1 hit and deliver 5 strikeouts to give the Grays their chance to get back into the game.
The offense would capitalize off this performance, with the Grays tying the game in the 7th on Travis Church (Marist) getting home on a passed ball. They would take the lead on a huge Xavier Bradley (Southern) double to score Joey Chitla (William & Mary) and would extend that lead on a Jackson Loomis (Denison) sacrifice fly to score Carter Sweeney-Strawberry (Rutgers).
Ryan Stoddard (Lafayette) would all but put this game away with a solo home run over the scoreboard to go up 4 in the 8th and Weaver's (Wofford) excellence would continue until there would be only one out left for the Senators. Unlikely reliever Beny Bikar Jr. (Southern) would get an out on the only batter he saw and the Grays would win their series against Southern Maryland 4-2 with a 7-4 win at home.
Xavier Bradley (Southern) would lead the way for the Grays on offense, hitting 2-2, driving in a RBI, and scoring a run. Travis Church (Marist) would also have a good performance, going 1-2 from the plate, receiving 2 walks, and scoring 2 runs. Lastly, Ryan Stoddard (Lafayette) had a huge sealing solo home run in the 8th to put this game away for D.C.
The Grays have their next game 7/16 at 6PM where they look to extend their winning against the top of the league Bethesda Big Train at Shirley Povich Field.
