Fast Start Not Enough as Grays Fall 6-4 to Big Train
By; Ethan Wentworth
The Grays fought hard in Bethesda, but were ultimately outmatched and defeated 6-4 by the Big Train.
The Grays started this game off hot, scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning on a Drew Rybinski (Georgetown) single to score both Joey Chitla (William & Mary) and Hartley Rahman (Catawba). The Grays defense would start this one off strong as well, with starter Beny Bikar Jr. (Southern) allowing only 1 hit and delivering 5 strikeouts in his first 4 innings of work including having a no hitter going into the 4th inning.
The Big Train offense would finally adjust, however, and would put up 6 runs in the 5th frame to take a commanding lead on the Grays with pressure mounting. D.C. would chip into the deficit, scoring a pair of runs in the 7th via an error to score Peyton Ford (U Cal of Penn) and a Ethan Fox-Fernandez (Vassar) groundout to score Freeman Hunt (Dickinson).
Unfortunately this would all be too little too late, as the late comeback attempt stalled and the Grays would lose 6-4 to the top ranked Big Train on the road. This game would have some great individual performances that the players will look to build off of though.
Drew Rybinski (Georgetown) kept his hot streak going, hitting 1-4 with a 2 RBI single in the 1st inning. Ryan Stoddard (Lafayette) would get solid burn on the mound today as a reliever, only allowing 1 run in 3 innings and punching in 2 strikeouts to keep the Grays in this one.
The Grays will play next at Alexandria in their final game of their series against the Aces 7/18 at 6:30PM at Frank Mann Field.
