DC defeats Braves 13-8 in offensive battle
The DC Grays improved to 6-5, after defeating the Metro South County Braves in a game full of offense at Woodbridge High School Sunday.
The Grays saw an offensive explosion in the fifth inning where they scored nine runs on seven hits and five free bases, almost batting through the order twice.
Ethan Nagy (Lock Haven) saw his second start of the season on the mound. He posted four innings with five strikeouts and allowed one earned run. His fastball reached 92 mph. Tyler Wiltsey (Rutgers) earned the win with two innings of relief, allowing one earned run on two hits out of the bullpen.
Rocco Gilbert (Alabama State) and Noel Rivera (Marist) led the offense. Gilbert notxhed three hits and an RBI and Rivera plated two runs.
The Grays struck first in the third inning. Ryan Grace (Lafayette) dropped a single down the right field line and Gilbert ripped a double to right center field to put runners on second and third base.
Joey Chitla (Wofford) plated Grace with a sacrifice fly to center field and Rivera ripped a single over the left fielder's head to score Gilbert. Rivera scored on a double steal to cap off the inning. The Grays led 3-0.
Both teams scored one run each in the fourth inning. Eli Owens (Washington & Jefferson) beat out an infield single and advanced to second base on a walk. Gilbert ripped a 102 mph single to score Owen, extending the DC lead to 4-1.
The Grays piled up nine runs in the fifth inning. Issac Ahokovi (Nichols State), Marc Quarrie (Rutgers) and Rivera drove in one run each. Grace sneaked a double down the third base line to plate three runs and Ryan Song (Washington) delivered his second hit of the inning, scoring two runs. The Braves also walked in one run.
The Braves added five runs in the seventh inning after Andrew Ruggeri (Penn) entered the game. Colin Casey (Randolph Macon) came in relief to record the final out, after walking in one run.
The score was set at 13-8 and stayed that way to end the game.
The Grays, now 6-5, play next against the Gaithersburg Giants at 7 p.m. at Woodbridge High School Monday.
