Grays Unable to Capitalize on Opportunities in Loss to Aces
By: Jackson Loomis
On Wednesday, June 24th, the DC Grays lost to the Alexandria Aces 7-2. It was a game that was closer than the score represented. The Grays pitching staff only allowed 3 earned runs in the game.
The Aces struck first in the top of the 2nd inning with three runs due to a balk and throwing error. The Grays responded in the bottom of the 2nd with a sac fly to center field that was hit by Andrew Bogansky (Marist), scoring Evan Wilson (Richmond).
The Grays pitching then threw three scoreless innings until the 6th when the Aces broke through with two more runs. Four pitchers threw for the Grays on the day. Coen Devilllier (Catholic), Daniel Ockerman (Georgetown), Nick Dolbin (Coppin State), and Nelson Hayes (Georgetown) had 9 strikeouts and 9 walks combined.
The Grays had 5 hits in the game by Freeman Hunt (Dickinson), Parker Shenman (Catholic), Xavier Bradley (Southern), and Hartley Rahman (Catawba). Bradley raked in a single and a double as well as a walk in the 9th inning. The Grays walked ten times total.
Overall, the DC Grays held their own against a tough opponent. They are now 1-4 against the Aces. It was a hard fought game with many baserunners for both teams. The ability to capitalize on runners in scoring position will be a difference maker in future contests.
