The Grays (8-13) are looking to bounce back from a losing skid and will face the Giants (5-13) tonight at 7 p.m. in Gaithersburg. The probable stater for the Grays is Harry Thomas (1-1) who is coming off a quality seven inning start allowing two earned runs. Gaithersburg’s Cory Callahan (0-0) is looking for his first quality start of the season. Callahan’s last appearance was in two innings of relief without giving up a hit and striking out two. Location: Criswell Automotive Field, 7 p.m. GAME RECAP 6-28-2015 By Anna Dunlavey; @annadunlaveyy The DC Grays took an early 2-0 lead last night in Baltimore against the Dodgers, but couldn’t hold on and fell 3-2 in 11 innings. The loss puts the Grays’ record at 8-13 on the season. The Grays bats were quiet again — the team managed only four hits — and they wasted another well-pitched ballgame. DC struck first, in the top of the fourth. 3B Taylor King (Memphis) drew a walk, and LF Lamar Briggs (Jackson State) doubled to drive him in. The Grays added another run in the sixth when DH Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) led off the top of the sixth with a walk and scored on a double by 1B Colton Shaver (Brigham Young). The Grays weren’t even able to hold the 2-0 count for a full inning, as the Dodgers scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. The Dodgers scored again in the bottom of the eighth to tie things up and force extra innings. The Grays were retired in order in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh innings, and the Dodgers scored the walkoff winner in the bottom of the eleventh. Grays starting pitcher Quinn Carpenter (Texas Tech) deserved more support. He gave up one run on seven hits through 6.2 innings on the hill. He struck out seven batters and walked one. Reid Frazier (Penn State) relieved Carpenter with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and pitched one complete inning, giving up one run on two hits, striking out one, and walking two. Marlon Pruitt (Grambling State) came in with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. He took the loss when he allowed the winning run to score on a bases loaded walk on the bottom of the 11th. He gave up one run on two hits, striking out two batters and walking three. Today, the Grays will travel to Gaithersburg to play the Gaithersburg Giants. Harry Thomas (UNC Greensboro), who started a game against the Giants earlier this season that was rained out after two innings, will hopefully not have the same problem this time around as he takes the Criswell Field mound again tomorrow. Tonight, the DC Grays (8-12) will take on the Baltimore Dodgers (7-11). Grays’ probable starter will be Quinn Carpenter (0-1) who is looking for his first win of the season. Carpenter had a rough outing his last time out, where he went three innings giving up six earned runs. The Dodgers will throw Harold Myles (0-0) who in his last start pitched 4 2/3 giving up two earned runs. Location: Joe Cannon Stadium, 7 p.m. GAME RECAP 6-26-2015
By: Anna Dunlavey; @annadunlaveyy The DC Grays kicked off their week on the road with a win last night, beating the Alexandria Aces 4-3. It was the third time these teams had met this season, and the second time the Grays came out on top. This win puts the Grays’ record at 8-12 on the season. C Colton Shaver (Brigham Young) was hot at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, including the game-winner in the ninth inning. Shaver played a role in all of the Grays’ runs. In the top of the first inning, he scored SS Jackson Kramer (Lafayette) with an RBI single. However, the Aces responded with a run in the second, and two runs in the fifth. The Grays hopped back into things in the top of the sixth, after an Aces pitching change. Once again it was Shaver who got things started as the inning’s leadoff batter, advancing all the way to third on errors by the right fielder. Shaver scored on a single from LF Lamar Briggs (Jackson State). Briggs scored after RF Bryan Baquer (Washington College) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and the score was tied at 3. The score remained tied going to the top of the ninth. Baquer led off with a single, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Then Shaver came up and delivered once again. He singled, and Baquer scored from second on an error by the left fielder with what became the winning run. The Grays were solid on the mound. Zack Irwin (East Mississippi CC) had his longest outing of the season in his second start. He threw for seven innings, and gave up three runs on eight hits. He walked two batters, and struck out six. The win, however, went to Reid Frazier (Penn State), who pitched the final two innings of the game. Frazier gave up one hit and struck out one batter for his first win. Tonight, the Grays will continue their road trip, taking on the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts at Montgomery Blair High School. Quinn Carpenter (Texas Tech) is the expected starting pitcher for the Grays. The Grays (8-12) will take on the T Bolts (10-8) tonight at 7 p.m. The probable starter for the Grays is Quinn Carpenter (0-1) who is looking for his first solid outing on the season. In his last start, Carpenter went three innings giving up six earned runs. T Bolts’ starter Logan Grant (0-0) pitched two scoreless innings in his last outing against the Grays giving up one hit. By: Anna Dunlavey; @annadunlavey Last night’s game between the DC Grays and the visiting FCA Herndon Braves was a scoreless battle until the top of the ninth inning — when the Braves scored the only run of the night to beat the Grays 1-0. The Grays’ record now stands at 7-12 on the season. Starting pitcher Connor Van Hoose (Bucknell) had an outstanding outing. He pitched seven innings, his longest outing of the season. Van Hoose only gave up four hits, struck out six batters, and did not walk anybody. Marlon Pruitt (Grambling State) took over in the eighth inning, and although he gave up no hits in the eighth inning, he ran into trouble in the ninth. After Pruitt walked two batters in a row with one out, the next batter hit into what could have been a double play. 1B Colton Shaver (Brigham Young) fielded the grounder, tossed the ball to SS Drew Reid (Harvard) for the first out, but as Reid threw the ball back to first, the Braves runner slid into him, affecting his throw. Shaver and Pruitt were both covering first, but neither one could catch the throw, and the Braves runner who had reached third easily scored. Reid Frazier (Penn State) then relieved Pruitt and struck out the final batter. The Grays did not give up hope entering the bottom of the ninth. The first two batters in the order were quickly retired, but Hunter Southerland (Texas Tech) walked. Desmond Stegall (Grambling State) came out to pinch run for Southerland, and then Reid singled. With two runners on and two outs, Tony Holton (Jackson State) hit a blast to left center. It looked like it would drop for a hit, but the Braves centerfielder made a diving catch to rob the Grays of the tying run and Holton of his tenth RBI on the season. The Grays have a day off today before beginning a week of road games. On Friday night, they will travel to Alexandria to play the Alexandria Aces. The DC Grays will honor some of Washington, DC’s best athletes tomorrow night before their game against the Herndon Braves with a “Salute to Legends Night.”
International Boxing Federation world light welterweight champion and DC area native Lamont Peterson will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Many baseball legends from the area will also be attending, along with Little Leaguers from Bolling AIr Force Base, Andrews Air Force Base and Fort Belvior. Peterson’s inspiring story has received worldwide attention. He and his brother Anthony were left parentless at a young age and were homeless for many years. The brothers developed their boxing skills under the tutelage of Barry Hunter, a successful coach from the Headbangers Boxing Program. Under Hunter’s mentorship, Anthony became a lightweight contender, while Peterson became one of the most exciting fighters in boxing. DC boxing fans will remember his homecoming performance at the DC Convention Center in 2011, where he came from behind to overtake Amir Khan. Many “DC Diamond Legends” will be honored by the Grays tomorrow as well. Al Bumbry (Baltimore Orioles), Emmanuel “Manny” Burriss (Wilson High School, Kent State University, San Grancisco Giants, Washington Nationals), Vince Colbert (Eastern High School, Cleveland Indians), Greg Fleet (Gwynn Park, Howard University, Texas Rangers), famed local sportscaster Glen Harris (Anacostia High School, Howard University), Ron Harris (Anacostia High School, George Washington University, Black Sox), Gerard Hall Jr (Gonzaga High School, Old Dominion University, Kansas City Royals, Schaumburg Boomers), Marvin Jackson (Ballou High School, Bowie State, CTV Host), Rock Newman (Gwynn Park, Howard University), Charles Vinson (Phelps High School, Angels and Yankees), Curtis “Butch” White (Western High School, Howard University), and Robert Woodland (Suitland High School, Howard University, Montreal Expos) will all be honored in a special pre-game ceremony. Fleet, Ron and Glen Harris, Jackson, and Newman are expected to attend in person. The festivities will start at 6:30 PM, and the first pitch with the Legends and local Little League ballpayers will be at 6:50 PM The DC Grays (7-11) are looking to bounce back from a rough last week. With starter Connor Van Hoose (1-1) looking to get his second win of the season, he is coming off a tough outing where he went 5 2/3 giving up five earned runs on seven hits. He will be facing Braves’ (5-7) Steven Shwartz (0-0) who went one inning in relief on June 11, giving up one earned run on two hits. Come out tonight to enjoy festivities before the game when the Grays honor DC’s great players on the diamond and in the ring. DC’s own Lamont Peterson, world light welterweight champion will throw out the first pitch! |
