GAME RECAP 6-15-15
BY: Anna Dunlavey @annadunlavey The DC Grays had a strong start and a strong finish in last night’s game against the Alexandria Aces. The Grays scored two runs in the bottom of the first, two runs in the bottom of the eighth, and closed out the 4-0 win with three strikeouts in the top of the ninth. The home win brings the Grays’ record to 6-4 on the season. CF Kane Hassan (St. Mary’s) got the offense started for the Grays in the bottom of the first with a walk. He then stole second and was driven home on Scott Sanders’ (Southeastern Louisiana) single. Sanders scored on singled to right, and Hassan beat the throw to the plate to score the first run of the game. Sanders scored on a two-out single by C Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion). Sinnen was thrown out trying to stretch a single o to a double, closing out the frame. No more runs scored until the bottom of the eighth inning. Meanwhile, Grays hurlers were putting zeroes on the scoreboard. Starting pitcher Dan Jarrell (Washington College) threw for 2.1 innings, giving up two hits and striking out one batter. He left the game in the top of the third in a bases loaded jam, and Marlon Pruitt (Grambling State), usually a late-game reliever, took over on the mound. The Grays got a quick double play to end the inning, and Pruitt pitched for four more solid innings. He gave up one hit, struck out three batters, and got the win. Reid Frazier (Penn State) pitched the eighth, giving up one hit and striking out two. In the bottom of the eighth, the Grays quickly loaded the bases. Sinnen singled, Drew Reid (Harvard) was hit by a pitch, and Lamar Briggs (Jackson State) singled. Although Mike Caputo (Seton Hall) hit into a double play, Sinnen still scored on the play. Then Tony Holton (Jackson State) delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Reid. Enrique Oquendo (Lamar) came in to close the game. He hit one batter, but struck out the side. Tonight, the Grays will play a makeup game against the Silver-Spring Takoma Thunderbolts at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD. Layton Dill (East Mississippi CC) is the projected starting pitcher for the Grays.
