GAME RECAP (Grays vs. Braves 6-10-2016)
The Grays dropped a high-scoring affair to the visiting FCA Herndon Braves at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy on Friday night, losing by a score of 10-7. The loss drops the Grays’ Ripken League record to 1-3 on the young season.
The Grays’ bats struck early and led after one inning. After CF Jawann McAllister (Pittsburgh) led off with a double, LF Luke Robinson (Lafayette) with a double. After a single by 3B Marques Inman (West Virginia), DH Lucas Martinez (Cal State San Bernadino) scored Robinson with an RBI ground out and the Grays lead 2-0.
The Grays fell behind after four innings but quickly rebounded to tie the game at six with a two RBI triple from RF Lamar Briggs (Jackson State) in the bottom of the sixth.
The Grays then allowed three runs in the top of the seventh and one in the top of the ninth. The score was 10-6 as the Grays batted in the bottom of the ninth. 1B Drake Hollingsworth (Alabama-Huntsville) gave the home fans hope when he crushed a 3-1 offering for his first home run of the season. Unfortunately, that was it for the Grays and the final score was 10-7.
The pitching was uneven for the home team. Lefty Bo Burrup (BYU) pitched well in relief once again as he struck out four batters over three innings and allowed no earned runs. Starting pitcher Scott Bean (Slippery Rock) pitched three innings and allowed four earned runs while also striking out three Braves batters. Reliever Bryan Quillens (Eastern Kentucky) took the loss, giving up three earned runs in three innings of work.
On Saturday the Grays will go on the road to face the Baltimore Dodgers (1-3) at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover, MD. On the mound for the
Grays will be right hander Evan Jordan (SE Louisiana). He will be opposed by Alexander Ross (Johns Hopkins) for the Dodgers.
