GAME RECAP (Grays vs Express ) 6-30-2016
By: DCGrays.com Press: Blane Crouse The DC Grays fell to the Rockville Express by a score of 9-7 onThursday night. The Grays fall to 9-13 on the season and remain in fourth place in the Ripken League South Division. The game was scoreless until the top of the third when theExpress scored three runs. The Grays added a run in the bottom of the third when DH Marques Inman (West Virginia) doubled to score 1B Tyler Thomas (Shepherd) who had singled earlier in the inning. The Express’ offense explodedin the top of the fourth for four more runs bringing the score to 7-1. 3B ZachMcCrum (Eastern Kentucky) homered in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-2. In the top of the sixth, the Express added another run. With the Grays badly needing a spark, McCrum hit his second home run of the day and his third in the past two days. His second homer was a two-run shot that scored C Evan Pace (SE Louisiana) who had been hit by apitch earlier in the inning. Following McCrum’s second home run, he came into pitchin the top of the seventh, recording a one two three inning. The Express added one more run in the top of the eighth off of McCrum (the only run he would allow)and extended their lead to 9-4. Suddenly, the Grays mounted a rally. Thomas grounded out to start the inning, but 2B Eric Sloper (Shepherd) singled. RF Lamar Briggs (Jackson St) fought hard in an eight-pitch at bat and eventually came through with a key triple, scoring Sloper. Next up, CF Jawan McAllister (Pittsburgh) grinded out an infield single and 3B Chris Perez (Grambling State) walked to load the bases. Pace struck out for the second out of the inning, but LF Luke Robinson (Lafayette) came through with a big double to score Briggs and McAllister and make the score 9-7. SS GarrettHudson (Virginia Tech) walked to load the bases for McCrum. With the Grays trailing by two they had an opportunity to tie or win the game, but ultimately they fell short asMcCrum struck out. LHP Bo Burrup was charged with the loss even though he allowed no earned runs over five innings. McCrum pitched three innings in relief,allowing only one hit and one earned run while striking out two. Robinson went one for four with a walk and two key RBIs. Briggs contributed a hit,a run, a RBI and a walk as well. Next up the Grays will take on the Bethesda Big Train in a double-header at the Nationals Youth Academy on Friday. Bathe first game starts at 5:00. LHPJacob Erikson (San Diego St) and RHP Simon Rosenblum-Larson (Harvard) will getthe starts for the Grays.
