The Grays recorded just two hits and one solitary run against a succession of four Baltimore Redbirds pitchers in a 4-1 loss on Monday, dropping their record on the season to 8-12. The Redbirds jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first when leadoff hitter LaMonte Wade Jr. (Maryland) tripled and scored on third baseman Matt Campbell’s (North Carolina) RBI single. Campbell also scored later in the inning to give Baltimore a 2-0 lead against Grays starter Colin Kelly (Catholic University). The Grays then scratched out their only run in the bottom of the inning on a walk to Cody Walker (Mississippi State), a single by Greg Olenski (Maryland), and an error by Redbirds catcher Ian Rice (Chipola College). Rice would get that run back plus more in the third, though, with a two-run double off Kelly to give the Redbirds a 4-1 lead. Kelly settled down after that, pitching a complete game with six strikeouts. As has often been the case of late, however, the Grays offense would not be able to mount a comeback as the Redbirds pitchers dominated. Peyton Fuller’s (Troy University) leadoff single in the third would be the Grays last hit of the game, with Redbirds relievers Eric Thomas (Rider University), Robert Galligan (Maryland), and Sean Kennedy (Virginia Tech) holding the Grays scoreless over the last five innings following starter Pete Macke’s (Pittsburgh) departure after the fourth. The Grays look to right the ship on Tuesday, July 2nd at 5:00 pm against the Gaithersburg Giants at the Giants home field of Kelley Park in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
