Cody Walker (Mississippi State) hit a monster walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Grays a 5-4 victory on Monday against the Alexandria Aces at Hoy Field Monday. Walker took a 1-1 fastball high and deep to left, setting off the celebration at home plate and in the stands. His walk-off shot capped a come from behind effort for the Grays, and improved their record to 11-14. The Aces took the lead in the second with three runs against Grays starter Colin Kelly (Catholic University), but Kelly settled down to pitch 8.1 innings as the offense chipped away at the lead. First baseman Jud Sherrill (Alabama-Huntsville) had an RBI single in the fourth to get the Grays on the board. They tied the game in the fifth when right fielder Eric Ramsey (Wake Forest) doubled home Desmond Stegall (Grambling State) and then scored on an error by the Aces shortstop. They would take the lead in the eighth when second baseman Jayson Yano (Stevens Tech) laid down a perfect squeeze bunt with two outs to score the runner from third. With the Grays looking to close out the game, the Aces tied it at four in the top of the ninth against reliever Chris Nee (Catholic University) on a broken bat hit that looped just over the pitcher’s mound and died on the infield grass. But Walker turned the heartbreak to euphoria with his shot. The Grays play next on Tuesday, July 9th against the first-place Bethesda Big Train in a doubleheader at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Maryland. The first game starts at 5:00 pm and will be followed by the nightcap at 7:30.
