Andrew Houghton 7/7/13
Starter Bryan McHale (Immaculata University) pitched eight innings of one-run ball for the Southern Maryland Nationals as they beat the Grays 3-1 on Sunday at Hoy Field. The loss dropped the Grays to 10-14 on the season. The Nationals scored one in the first and two in the second as Grays starter Enrique Oquendo(McLennan CC) struggled early. Only a great throw from left fielder Greg Olenski (Maryland) to catcher Cody Walker (Mississippi State) to nab a runner at the plate in the second held the Nationals to three runs and limited. The Grays added one of their own in the bottom of the second, with three straight singles loading the bases before a run-scoring double play and a strikeout killed the threat. Oquendo settled down, getting through 5.1 innings. McHale, however, continued to shut down the Grays bats inning after inning. He departed after eight having allowed only five hitsand the one run and reliever John-Austin Shepard (Tusculum College) worked around a leadoff walk to pitch a scoreless ninth and end the Grays hopes. Jacob Williams (George Washington) pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless ball for the Grays in relief. The Grays play next on Monday, July 8th at 5:00 pm against the Alexandria Aces at Hoy Field on the campus of Gallaudet University.
