6-12-15 GAME RECAP By: Anna Dunlavey @annadunlavey Rain and winds threatened before the start of Friday nights game, but the Grays persevered and got a win. The Grays beat the Vienna River Dogs 4-2 at the Nationals Youth Academy and brought their record up to 4-3 on the season. The Grays also saw their first home run of the season, hit by DH Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) in the fifth inning. 1B Scott Sanders (Sotheastern Louisiana) went 2-3 with a run scored and two RBI, and he got his work started in the game’s first inning. 3B Keifer Rawlings (Bucknell) got to first on an error and stole second, and Sanders blasted the first hit of the game, a double, to bring him home. Sanders himself scored on a double from SS Jackson Kramer (Lafayette). In the bottom of the third, CF Brian Baquer (Washington College) doubled, and Sanders singled to score him. Sinnen lead off the inning in the top of the fifth, right after a River Dogs pitching change. Sinnen swung at the first pitch he was thrown, and the ball sailed over the right field fence and out of the park. Starting pitcher Maverik Buffo (Brigham Young) was very good, striking out five batters over 3.2 innings. Unfortunately, Buffo had to leave the game with a minor ankle injury after colliding with a River Dogs runner sliding into home plate. Lefty Dan Jarrell (Washington C0llege) took over, and pitched 3.1 innings of solid relief. The River Dogs went down in order in the fourth and fifth innings, but in the sixth, a runner reached first on an error and later scored. Ryan Garner (Memphis) pitched 1.2 innings, but after a River Dogs player walked and stole second, Reid Frazier (Penn State) was called on to get the final out in the eighth. Marlon Pruitt (Grambling State) pitched the top of the ninth and got the save. Tonight, the Grays will travel to Herndon High School to face the Herndon Braves. The last time the Braves and the Grays met, the Grays won the season opener 6-2. Jarred Scott (Alabama Southern CC) is the Grays’ expected starting pitcher.

Game Location: Nationals Youth Academy (3675 Ely Place SE, Washington DC) First Pitch: 7:00pm 6-11-15 GAME RECAP By Anna Dunlevy: @annadunlaveyy The DC Grays managed to eke out a win last night over the homestanding Rockville Express Montgomery College. The Grays had a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Express scored two runs before the Grays could close the game. The 3-2 win brings the Grays’ record to 3-3 on the season. Rawlings singled to centerfield, and then advanced to second and third on two more hits before scoring on a sacrifice fly from LF Kane Hassan (Saint Mary’s). In the top of the fifth, CF Bryan Baquer (Washington College) was hit by a pitch with two outs, and Rawlings singled to move Baquer to second. DH Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominian) then hit a double to center field to score both Baquer and Rawlings. Starting pitcher Connor Van Hoose (Bucknell) pitched six shutout innings. He gave up three hits and struck out four batters. Marlon Pruitt (Grambling State), one of the Grays most reliable relievers, came to pitch scoreless baseball in the seventh and eighth innings. Zack Irwin (Mississippi State) came in to pitch the ninth. The Grays got the first out, but Irwin then gave up two singles and hit a batter to load the bases. The Express’ first run of the game scored on a walk, and the second scored on a fielder’s choice. Luckily, the Grays were able to get the final Express batter to seal the win. The Grays return home to the Nationals Youth Academy tonight to play the Vienna River Dogs at 7:00pm. Maverick Buffo (Brigham Young) is the expected starting pitcher for the Grays. 6-10-15 GAME RECAP
By: Anna Dunlavey The DC Grays waited until the ninth inning to get their first hit and their first run Wednesday night, but by then, of course, it was too late. The Bethesda Big Train bested the Grays at the Nationals Youth Academy, winning 4-1. The Grays overall record dropped to 2-3 on the season. The Grays wasted good pitching. Starter Layton Dill (East Mississippi CC) pitched for 5.2 innings, and gave up two runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Reid Frazier (Penn State) took over for Dill and threw for 1.2 innings, allowing one run. Ryan Garner (Memphis) threw for .2 innings, giving up a run and a hit. Marlon Pruitt (Grambling State) went out for the ninth inning and got three quick outs, two of which were strikeouts. The score was tight for most of the game. The Big Train scored in the first inning, but the score remained at 1-0 until the top of the sixth, when the Bethesda leadoff batter tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. Even then, a comeback didn’t seem impossible, but the Big Train scored two insurance runs in the top of the eighth to bring the score to 4-0 and digging a deeper hole for the Grays. In the bottom of the ninth, the Grays tallied at last. CF Bryan Baquer (Washington College) got the Grays’ first hit, a single, and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher. He scored on a double from 3B Keith Rawlings (Bucknell), and the Grays suddenly had life. Just a quickly as it started, however, the Grays rally fizzled. The next three Grays’ batter went down in order. The Grays will be on the road tonight, taking on the Rockville Express at their home field at Montgomery College-Rockville. Connor Van Hoose (Bucknell) is the expected starting pitcher for the Grays. GAME RECAP By Anna Dunlavey The DC Grays slugged their way to an early lead in Sunday afternoon’s home game against the Baltimore Dodgers, and did just enough to hold on by an 8-6 score. The win improves the Grays’ record to 2-2 — good enough for third place in the Southern Division of the Ripken League. Starting pitcher John Cain (Lafayette) threw no-hit ball for six innings and picked up the win. CF Bryan Baquer (Washington College) went 2-4 with a walk, scored two runs and had one RBI. Both of Baquer’s hits were for extra bases. The Grays wasted no time generating offense, scoring four runs in the first inning and two more in the second. After leadoff hitter Baquer doubled and 3B Keifer Rawlings (Bucknell) followed with a base hit, DH Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) singled up the first base line to score Baquer. Rawlings scored on a single from RF Tony Holton (Jackson State) before C Hunter Southerland (Texas Tech) came up for an eventful, but lucky, at bat. Sinnen and Holton both advanced a base after a passed ball, and when the Dodgers 1B bobbled a ground ball, Southerland was safe at first and Sinnen was safe at the plate. Holton scored the fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly from LF Lamar Briggs (Jackson State). In the bottom of the second, after Grays SS Jackson Kramer (Lafayette) led off with a single and stole second, Baquer lined a triple to deep right field, scoring Kramer. Baquer then scored on a single from Rawlings. Meanwhile on the mound, Cain kept the Dodger’s bats completely silent, walking three batters and striking out seven.
The Grays picked up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to get an 8-0 lead. Briggs, who reached first on an error and moved to second on a walk by 2B Mike Caputo (Seton Hall), scored on a double to deep center from Kramer. Caputo scored on a sacrifice fly from Sinnen. The runs didn’t seem important at the time, but by the seventh inning, they proved crucial. Will Korosec (Stevens Tech) came out to relieve Cain in the top of the seventh, and walked the first two batters he faced. Both Dodger runners scored. Steven Ghiardi (Millersville) took over with two outs and retired the side, but ran into trouble in the eighth. Ghiardi hit two batters, one with the bases loaded, and a run scored. Zack Irwin (East Mississippi CC) took over for Ghiardi in a bases loaded jam, but gave up two singles in a row before retiring the side. In all, four runners scored in the inning, closing the gap to 8-6. Marlon Pruitt (Grambling State) came in to close the game. What had once been a blowout was now a save situation, but Pruitt kept it under control. After two quick outs, he walked a batter, but struck out the next batter to end the game. The Grays will be on the road tomorrow night, taking on the Gaithersburg Giants at Criswell Automotive Field. The Grays return home to the Washington Nationals Youth Academy on Wednesday night to host the Bethesda Big Train. GAME RECAP By Anna Dunlavey; @annadunlaveyy Despite a late comeback that tied the game, the DC Grays lost their home opener to the Baltimore Redbirds last night in front of a Nationals Academy crowd that included local youth baseball players from Mamie Johnson Little League and Southern District Little League, who were honored before the game. The Redbirds scored in the top of the ninth for a 4-3 win. The DC Grays’ record is now 1-2 on the young Ripken League season. The Redbirds scored first, plating two runs in the third. The Grays got a run back in the fifth, when DH Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) singled, and then reached second, third, and scored all on wild pitches. The race for home was a close one, with Sinnen and the Redbirds’ catcher reaching the plate at almost the same time, but Sinnen just barely beat him. The Grays were within one, but in the top of the sixth, the Redbirds answered to bring the score to 3-1. The Grays rallied bottom of the seventh. LF Bryan Baquer (Washington College) doubled with one out, and after a pitching change for the Redbirds, Baquer scored on a long double from SS Jackson Kramer (Lafayette). CF Desmond Stegall (Grambling State), back for his third season with the Grays, who has entered the game earlier, delivered with two outs. He blasted a triple out to deep centerfield, scoring Kramer and tying the game at 3. Unfortunately, the Redbirds were the ones to break the tie. In the top of the ninth, after giving up a walk and a single, Grays’ starting pitcher Maverik Buffo (Brigham Young) tired. Buffo had pitched a solid eight innings, giving up three runs on five hits and striking out four batters in his first Grays’ start. He was relieved by Reid Frazier (Penn State). The first batter he faced bunted, and when Frazier threw the ball away, the Redbirds runner on second was able to score. Frazier was tagged with an error and Buffo took the loss. Today, the Grays return to the Nationals Youth Academy to take on the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League’s other Baltimore team, the Baltimore Dodgers. The game will start at 1PM, and John Cain (Lafayette) is the expected starting pitcher. 2015 DC Grays Home Opener Tonight against Redbirds; East of the River baseball leagues to be honored

By: Anna Dunlavey The DC Grays suffered their first loss of the season last night. Despite bringing five different pitchers to the mound over the course of the game, they could not silence the bats of the Alexandria Aces. The Grays lost 12-1 at Barcroft Park. The team’s record for the season is 1-1. Dan Jarrell’s (Washington College) first start was a rough one. He pitched just one inning, walking one and giving up four runs on six hits. He was tagged with the loss. The winning pitcher for the Aces, Gabriel Mosser, shut down the Grays offensively. He did not allow any earned runs and only gave up one hit over five innings of work. For the Grays, Steven Ghiardi (Millersville) came in to relieve Jarrell, and kept the Aces scoreless for two innings. Rebounding from a 4-0 deficit did not seem impossible. However, to start the bottom of the fourth, Ghiardi hit the first batter he faced and walked the next two. Ryan Garner (Memphis) took over on the mound to try to get the Grays out of the bases loaded jam. He was able to get out the first batter he faced, but the second batter hit a single that drove in all three Aces runners. The Aces scored three more runs before the inning was over, and suddenly the Grays were facing a 10-0 deficit. With Mosser off the mound in the top of the sixth, the Grays were able to score a run of their own. Kane Hassan (St. Mary’s-CA) doubled to drive in Corey Chafin (Memphis), who had reached first on an error. Jarred Scott (Meridian CC) took the mound in the fifth inning and was solid for two innings, but gave up two runs in the top of the seventh. Marlon Pruitt (Grambling State) got the Aces out in order in the bottom of the eighth, but by then it was too late for the Grays to rebound. The Grays will play their home opening game, against the Baltimore Redbirds, tonight at 7PM at the Nationals Youth Academy. Maverik Buffo (Brigham Young) is the expected starting pitcher for the Grays. Game Recap By: Anna Dunlavey The DC Grays are off to a great start for the 2015 season, winning their first game on the road against the Herndon Braves 6-2. Starting pitcher Layton Dill (East Mississippi CC/Mississippi State) got off to a great start and just missed getting the win as he went 4.2 innings before loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth were Connor Van Hoose (Bucknell) came in to hold the Braves at two runs for two innings on the mound while Reid Frazier (Penn State) and Zach Irwin (East Mississippi CC/Ole Miss) closed out the last 3 innings. Out of the eight total runs scored in the game, only one was earned. The Braves got the early lead, scoring once in the second inning and once in the third. However, the Grays bounced back in the fourth to score their first four runs of the game. Tony Holton (Jackson State) started the top of the fourth with a single, then stole second and continued to third on an error by the catcher. Scott Sanders (Southeast Louisiana) singled to get him home. Sanders then scored on a double from Hunter Southerland (Texas Tech), who came home on a hit from Jackson Kramer (Lafayette). In the top of the seventh, Kane Hassan (St. Mary’s-CA) got on base after an error by the third baseman, and scored on a double from Sanders. The only earned run in the game came in the top of the ninth, when Sanders, who had singled, scored his second run of the game on a wild pitch. Designated hitter Sanders was the Grays’ top producer at the plate. He went 3-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. The Grays are on the road again tonight, playing the Silver Spring/Takoma Thunderbolts at Montgomery Blair High School. Dan Jarrell (Washington College) is the Grays’ expected starting pitcher. The Grays’ home opener will be this Saturday at 7PM at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. |
