Grays sweep Orioles in twinbillJune 24, 2012 – In a taut afternoon doubleheader at Hoy Field, the D.C. Grays (8-9) twice defeated the Youse’s Orioles by scores of 5-4 and 7-5. In the opening game the Grays started slow, falling behind 4-0 in the 6th, before a two run shot by LF John Beaubien (Seton Hall) opened the floodgates. The Grays would eventually score three more in the inning following a triple from RF Josh Powell (Alcorn State). Grays pitcher Danny O’Donnell (George Washington) went seven effective innings for a complete game, sending the Orioles down in order to close out the win in the seventh. In the second game, Grays’ starter Joel Castillo (Morehead State) endured a difficult beginning to the game allowing four runs in the second inning. However, the Grays came charging back in the bottom half of the second with six hits and five runs. Castillo bounced back to pitch six strong innings and, following Grays runs in the fifth and sixth innings, was credited with the win. The Grays got production from up and won the batting order, with Powell following up his strong first game with two more hits and an RBI. CF Billy Bissell (Gallaudet) contributed two hits as well, as did RF Tommy Barksdale (Gallaudet). Click here for stats and the boxscore. The Grays three-game winning streak moved the team into fifth-place in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. The Grays look to build on this winning streak on the road tonight against the Vienna River Dogs at 7:00pm.
