​July 26, 2012 – The Grays currently hold a record of 18-19, good for sixth in the league standings, with a .486 winning percentage, and are 7-3 over the last ten games. The final five games of the regular season begin today with a double-header against the Nationals, at 5:00pm and 7:00pm, at Regency Furniture Field. Friday at 6:30pm the Grays take on the Redbirds at Calvert Hall, and will play Saturday against the River Dogs at 3:00pm at Hoy Field, then again at 8:00pm versus the Braves in Herndon. At stake is a possible fifth or sixth seed in the playoffs.

July 25, 2012 – The DC Grays continued their move up the Ripken League standings with an exciting 8-7 tenth-inning win over the Alexandria Aces at Hoy Field. The Grays are now 18-19 in their inaugural season, and in sixth place in the league standings with five games left to play.

Grays CF Josh Powell (Alcorn State) lashed a line-drive single to right field, scoring SS Zach Lopes (Delaware) from third with the winning run in the bottom of the tenth. Other offensive stars included Lopes with four hits, 2B Mike Genovese (Seton Hall) with two hits, C Manny Cabreja (Columbia) with two hits, and RF Matt Kianka (Central Arizona CC) with three hits. The Grays continue their busy late-season schedule with a doubleheader Thursday in Waldorf against the Southern Maryland Nationals. The first game starts at 5:00pm.

July 24, 2012 – In a rare double-header against two different teams, the DC Grays kept themselves in the playoff hunt with a split of two games. The Grays’ record now stands at 17-19–still just a half-game behind in the chase for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League.

Both games were played at Frank Mann Field in Alexandria, even though only one of the games involved the Alexandria Aces. In the opener, the Southern Maryland Nationals were technically the home team, since that game was a rescheduled game from a rain-out in Waldorf on July 14. The Nationals took advantage of some sloppy Grays defense (DC made five errors) to notch a 4-3 win. The Grays wasted a fine pitching performance from starter Rob Rizzitelli (Pace), who allowed just one run on three hits through seven innings before tiring in the eighth. Rizzitelli leads the Ripken League with a 2.10 ERA. Grays LF John Beaubien (Seton Hall) and 3B Mike Genovese (Seton Hall) had two hits apiece for the Grays, and Beaubien knocked in two runs. In the nightcap, the Grays scored two runs in the top of the ninth to defeat the Aces 7-6. Genovese had the key hit in the late rally, driving in two runs with a single with one out. He had three RBIs in the game, as did Beaubien who raised his team-leading batting average to .367 with three more hits. The rally made a winner out of Grays reliever Steven Paladino (Felician), who struck out four in one and one-third innings of shutout relief. Click here for stats and the boxscore.

The Grays return home to Hoy Field on Wednesday to face the Aces again. First pitch is at 5:00pm.

July 23, 2012 – The DC Grays are playing well at the right time, winning their fourth straight game by defeating the Bethesda Big Train 10-7 in come-from-behind fashion at Hoy Field. The win moves the Grays to 16-18 on the season with less than a week to play, just a half-game behind in the chase for the sixth and final Ripken League playoff spot.

The Grays were down 6-3 in the fifth inning before storming back to take control of the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, two in the sixth and two more in the eighth. The Grays mounted their come back with the longball, as three Grays homered–SS Zach Lopes (Delaware), DH Blake Overmiller (Catonsville CC), and LF John Beaubien (Seton Hall). 3B Mike Genovese (Seton Hall) and C Manny Cabreja (Columbia) chipped in with two hits each. Blake Louscher (Central Michigan) won his fourth game of the season with three solid innings of relief, and Stephen Paladino (Felician) pitched a scoreless ninth for the save. The Grays play an oddball double-header Tuesday in Alexandria. The team plays the Southern Maryland Nationals at 3:00pm at Frank Mann Field, in what was supposed to have been a Nationals home game but was rained out on July 14. The Grays then play the Alexandria Aces at 7:00pm in a make-up of a rescheduled game from June 30.

​July 22, 2012 – The DC Grays won three games in unusual style this weekend, winning two suspended games and one full game to improve to 15-18 on the season. The Grays are in seventh place in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, just a game behind the Alexandria Aces for the final playoff spot.

On Saturday, the Grays defeated the Herndon Braves 3-2 in a game that was previously suspended due to rain and darkness after eight innings on Sunday, July 15. When play resumed on Saturday at Hoy Field, the Grays scored in the bottom of the 11th on an infield single by 2B Mike Genovese (Seton Hall). That made a winner of relief pitcher Chris Nee (Catholic). Click here for stats and the boxscore. The regularly-scheduled game between the Grays and Braves that day was rained out after just one inning, however, and the make-up date is unclear.

The Grays notched a pair of wins on Sunday at Hoy Field against the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts. The first win came on the completion of a game that was suspended on Saturday, July 7 with the Grays leading in the by a score of 15-9 in the tenth inning. Grays pitcher Danny O’Donnell (George Washington) retired the T-Bolts quietly in the bottom of the tenth (the T-Bolts were the home team in the suspended game) to seal the win for the Grays. There were several hitting starts for the Grays in the suspended game, including RF Josh Powell (Alcorn State) who knocked in four runs. SS Zach Lopes (Delaware) drove in three runs and played stellar defense in the late innings. Click here for stats and the boxscore.

In the regularly scheduled game Sunday afternoon, the Grays came from behind for a 7-4 win. Grays reliever Blake Louscher (Central Michigan) notched the win in relief of O’Donnell, who overcame a shaky start to give the Grays six and two-thirds serviceable innings. Nee pitched a scoreless ninth for the save. Grays C Blake Overmiller (Catonsville CC) tied the score with a run-scoring double in the eighth, and Genovese put the Grays ahead for good when he plated Overmiller with a single past a drawn-in infield. The Grays return to action on Monday at 5:00pm at Hoy Field to take on the red-hot Bethesda Big Train.

July 20, 2012 – The DC Grays fell to the Rockville Express 5-0 Friday night to fall to 12-18 in their inaugural season in the Ripken League.

Grays starter Stephen Pallidino (Felician) allowed five runs on six hits with five strikeouts. On the offensive end the Grays managed only six hits against the Express pitching staff, with CF Billy Bissell (Gallaudet) going two for four, and pinch-hitter Matt Kianka (Central Arizona CC) hammering a two-out triple in the ninth. The Grays were unable to capitalize on three solid innings of relief from Jason Jamula (Moravian) and Charlie Baxter (Williams College).

On Saturday, the Herndon Braves and Grays will complete the game that was suspended due to rain last Sunday with the score tied 2-2, and then will play a regularly scheduled game immediately following the completion of the suspended game. Because the Braves field was unplayable, these games will be played at Hoy Field.

On Sunday, the Grays will host the Silver Spring-Tacoma Thunderbolts at Hoy Field. Before that game, the two teams will complete a game from July 7–a game that was suspended with the Grays leading 15-9 in the tenth inning.

July 19, 2012 – The DC Grays completed a previously-suspended game with the Baltimore Redbirds, losing 6-2 at Calvert Hall outside Baltimore (click here for stats and the boxscore). The regularly-scheduled game that was to follow the completion of the suspended game was itself rained out, however, further exacerbating weather-related issues that have made a mess of the Grays’ late-season schedule.

The Grays’ game on Wednesday night against the Vienna River Dogs was postponed due to rain and lightning, and now the team embarks on an aggressive schedule to complete its 42-game regular season schedule. The Grays play the Express in Rockville tonight, and will then play the Herndon Braves in Herndon on Saturday night. The Braves and Grays will complete the game that was suspended due to rain last Sunday with the score tied 2-2, and then will play a regularly scheduled game immediately following the completion of the suspended game.

On Sunday, the Grays will host the Silver Spring-Tacoma Thunderbolts at Hoy Field. Before that game, the two teams will complete a game from July 7–a game that was suspended with the Grays leading 15-9 in the tenth inning.

On Monday the Grays will host the Big Train at Hoy Field, and on Tuesday the Grays will play two games at Alexandria’s Frank Mann Field. The first game will be against the Southern Maryland Nationals, which is a make-up of a rained out game from July 14, and the second game will be a regularly-scheduled game against the hometown Alexandria Aces.
