Grays starter Henry Sisson (North Carolina) pitched a great game on Friday, giving up only two runs in eight innings, but was outdone by his counterpart Joseph Vanderplas (UMD Baltimore) of the Vienna River Dogs to take the tough-luck loss. Vanderplas pitched a complete game, only the fourth thrown in the league so far this year, holding the Grays to one run to get the win. Both pitchers were in complete control until the seventh, when the River Dogs scored two unearned runs off Sisson in an inning kept alive by a two-out error by Grays third baseman Will Benenson (Franklin and Marshall). The Grays offense, hoping to get Sisson off the hook, brought one back in the bottom of the inning on a home run by left fielder Greg Olenski (Maryland), his league lead tying second of the year. Sisson finished up his day with a scoreless eighth inning and Grays relievers Matt Kilby (Navy) and Tom Murphy (Williams College) combined for a scoreless top of the ninth, leaving the Grays one last chance for a comeback. Unfortunately it was not to be, as Vanderplas finished his masterpiece by getting Jud Sherrill (Alabama-Huntsville) to fly out to center with a runner on first to end it. The Grays actually outhit the River Dogs five-four, getting two hits apiece from Olenski and catcher Cody Walker (Mississippi State), but couldn’t string enough of them together to put runs on the board. The Grays play next on Saturday, June 22 at 5:00 pm against the Rockville Express at Hoy Field. Come on down for an afternoon of great baseball in the shadow of the Capitol.

The Grays beat the Youse’s Orioles 4-3 on Thursday at Hoy Field, coming back from two runs down in the eighth inning to record the victory. The big blow was a two out, two-run triple by left fielder Greg Olenski (Maryland) that tied the game and was followed by an RBI single by third baseman Bryan DeRosario (Shepherd College) that gave the Grays the lead. Relievers Sherman Graves (Savannah State) and Jayson Yano (Stevens Tech) then shut the Orioles down in the ninth to clinch the win. The game started as a pitcher’s duel, with Grays starter Chunner Nyberg (BYU) matching zeros with Orioles hurler Michael Taylor until the fourth, when each team scored one run. The Orioles would add another in the sixth and Nyberg would leave after seven with no chance to get the win, despite only allowing the two runs and striking out five. When the Orioles scored one off Graves in the top of the eighth, the Grays looked headed for another tough-luck loss, but Yano and right fielder Eric Ramsey (Wake Forest) both reached base to start the bottom of the inning. A double play appeared to erase the threat, but a walk to first baseman Jud Sherrill (Alabama-Huntsville) kept the inning alive and set the stage for Olenski and DeRosario’s heroics. Yano came on in relief of Graves with two out in the ninth after an error put the tying run on base and needed only one pitch to end the game, getting pinch hitter Kyle Convissar to ground out to shortstop to send Grays fans home happy. The Grays bullpen let them down again Wednesday, with the Baltimore Redbirds scoring three in the bottom of the ninth to win at Carlo Crispino Stadium. The Grays had scored two in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie on RBI singles by Eric Ramsey (Wake Forest) and Will Benenson (Franklin and Marshall) before reliever Chris Nee (Catholic) gave up the three spot in the bottom of the inning, with the Redbirds runs coming on a sacrifice fly and a hit batsman before the final nail in the coffin was delivered by Lee Lipinski’s walkoff single. Up until that point, the Grays had played well, scratching out a run in the second on two walks, a hit, and an RBI groundout by Jayson Yano (Stevens Tech). Tom Murphy (Williams College) started well and pitched 4 1/3 only giving up 1 earned run. Jake Williams (George Washington) then stepped in and gave up the lead in the fifth on a two-run home run by Redbirds catcher Ian Rice. The Grays manufactured another run in the sixth, with center fielder Desmond Stegall (Grambling State) providing the RBI groundout this time to tie the game at two. That was the way it would remain until the ninth, as Grays relievers Jacob Williams (George Washington), Peyton Fuller (Troy University), and Yano combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless pitching, giving the team a chance to win it with the runs in the ninth. But it was not to be, as Nee couldn’t hold the lead and the Redbirds took the victory. The Grays play next on Thursday, June 20, at 5:00 pm against the Youse’s Orioles at Hoy Field. Harrison Farmer (Furman) and Greg Olenski (Maryland) each hit long home runs today as the Grays recorded one of their best offensive outings of the young season to top the Youse’s Orioles 6-3 at Hoy Field. Farmer’s blast landed across the street beyond the fence in left field to tie the game at one in the second inning. In the fifth, with the Grays clinging to a 2-1 lead, Olenski powered up, clearing the fence in left for a two-run shot that would give the Grays all the insurance runs they would need. Right hander Colin Kelly, a recent signee from Catholic University, scattered seven hits across seven innings to allow only three runs and Jayson Yano (Stevens Tech) and Chris Nee (Catholic) each threw a scoreless inning in relief to lock down the game. Farmer and Olenski weren’t the only ones to bust out for the Grays, with every starter except right fielder Brandon Kiser (Grambling State) recording at least one hit. Other offensive stars included catcher Cody Walker (Mississippi State) and center fielder Desmond Stegall (Grambling State), who each reached base four times in the game, Stegall throwing in an RBI triple and two stolen bases for good measure. For the Orioles, shortstop Sergio Leon, the league’s leading hitter entering play, led the way with two hits and a run scored. The Grays play next on Wednesday, June 19th, at 6:30 pm against the Baltimore Redbirds at the Redbirds home field at Calvert Hall High School in Calvert Hall, Maryland. Andrew Houghton | 6/15/13
The Grays took their worst loss of the young season to date, getting thoroughly outplayed by the Youse’s Orioles and losing 10-2 at the Orioles home stadium Bachman Field. Once again the Grays got off to a good start, as leadoff batter Jayson Yano (Stevens Tech) and two hole hitter Eric Ramsey (Wake Forest) both singled to start the game and Yano scored on an error by the pitcher to give the Grays a 1-0 lead. But this would be their high point, as the Orioles jumped on Grays starter Scotty Ward (Florida Tech) for 5 runs in 2+ innings. Righthander Sherman Graves (Savannah State) came on in the third to try to stop the bleeding, but the Orioles continued their offensive assault, scoring four more runs off Graves in his four innings of work to put the game out of reach. Outfielder Brandon Kiser (Grambling State) had the only RBI for the Grays, driving in Greg Olenski (Maryland) with a groundout in the fourth after Olenski’s one out triple. The Grays play next on Sunday, June 16 at 6:00 pm against the Silver Spring/Takoma Thunderbolts at the Thunderbolts home field at Blair Stadium in Silver Spring, Maryland. Andrew Houghton | 6/14/13
The Grays chalked up both a win and a loss against the last place Herndon Braves at Hoy Field on Friday despite playing only 12 innings in total. The Grays won an extra inning game game that was suspended on June 8 before dropping their regularly scheduled game. The Grays won the resumed game on a walkoff double by Greg Olenski (Maryland) in the bottom of the 13th inning before losing the regularly scheduled game 7-3. The completion of the earlier game was necessary due to the lack of lights of Hoy Field that caused that game to be suspended with the score 5-5 in the bottom of the tenth. When the game resumed, both teams had chances in the eleventh. The Braves bunted into a double play while trying to squeeze home the tying run in the top of the inning and the Grays loaded the bases with no outs in their half but couldn’t score. After an uneventful twelfth, Grays pitcher Henry Sisson (North Carolina), who remained in the game to hit, drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 13th and came around to score on Olenski’s double, sliding headfirst across the plate to touch off the celebration for the Grays. After a short break, the second game started with Sisson remaining on the mound for the Grays to face off against Herndon’s Gregory Krug. This game started right where the last one left off for the Grays, as they pushed across two in the first on RBI singles by catcher Jud Sherrill (Alabama-Huntsville) and designated hitter Will Benenson (Franklin and Marshall). Sisson also continued to pitch well, yielding only two runs in his five innings of work, an admirable performance considering he had already pitched three innings of shutout relief to get the win in the earlier game. With the Grays pushing across another run in the fourth on an RBI single by center fielder Eric Ramsey (Wake Forest), he looked poised to perhaps add a second win to his day’s total. Unfortunately, the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead, with the Braves tying the game in the sixth off Tom Murphy (Williams College) and then breaking it open in the eighth with four runs off Cameron Lundmark (Shenandoah University), an inning highlighted by a two-run single by second baseman Nick Morabito. The Grays went down meekly in their last two at-bats to give Herndon only its second win of the season. The Grays play next on Saturday June 15, 2013 at 7:00 pm against the Youse’s Orioles at Bachman Park in Glen Burnie, MD. Due to rain, today’s game (June 13) against the Redbirds has been postponed. The make-up is scheduled for Tuesday, June 25th and will begin at 5:00pm at Hoy Field.

The Grays early season winless streak came to an end Wednesday night, as they lost 6-2 to the Alexandria Aces on a humid evening at Hoy Field. The Aces struck early, scoring four in the first off Grays starter Chunner Nyberg (BYU) on two-run singles by DH Nick Collins (Georgetown) and 2B Philip Flach (Samford). The Aces would add two more in the fourth on a bases loaded walk by Collins and an RBI single by C Bobby Burns (Morehead State), but the story of the game was the Aces pitching. Starter Colin Milon (George Washington) and relievers Tyler Brown (Wingate) and Blake Ream (Longwood) combined to allow only three hits with eleven strikeouts. The only runs for the Grays came on a DJ Miller (Delaware State) sacrifice fly in the third and an RBI single by RF Greg Olenski (Maryland) in the ninth. The lone bright spot for the Grays came from bullpen, as Jacob Williams (George Washington), Matt Kilby (Navy), and Yahya Muhammad (Coppin State) held the Aces scoreless following Nyberg’s exit after the fourth. The misfortune for the Grays continued on the injury front, as starting second baseman Jayson Yano (Stevens Tech) left the game in the fifth after he was hit by a baserunner on a stolen base attempt in the previous inning. The Grays play next on Thursday June 13th, taking on the Baltimore Redbirds at Hoy Field at 5:00 pm. Due to rain, the doubleheader against the Big Train been postponed. The make-up for this doubleheader is scheduled for Tuesday, July 9th and will begin at 5:00pm at Shirley Povich Field.

The Grays struck early and battled late to beat the Southern Maryland Nationals 8-6 on the road at Regency Furniture Stadium Sunday night. Grays 1B Harrison Farmer (Furman) hit a two-out, three-run double to right field to clear the loaded bases in the top of the first after the Grays scored an earlier run on a bases loaded walk by Nationals starting pitcher Zeke McGranahan and took a 4-0 early lead. They tacked on two more in the third and appeared to be in control with left-hander Scotty Ward (Florida Tech) stifling the Nationals bats through five innings, allowing only three hits and a run. But things started to change in the sixth, as the Nationals broke through off Yahya Muhammad (Coppin State), scoring four unearned runs on back to back two-run singles by center fielder Trevor Freeman and left fielder Brycen Gladbach. The Nationals squeaked another unearned run across the plate off pitcher Sherman Graves (Savannah State), who made his season debut in the seventh inning to tie the game 6-6. The Grays steadied, then came back. After Tom Murphy (Williams College) pitched a scoreless eighth for the Grays, LF Brandon Kiser (Grambling State) led off the top of the ninth with a double off the left-field wall on the tenth pitch of his at-bat. He would score two batters later as SS DJ Miller (Delaware State) reached on an error by the shortstop. After a stolen base, Miller also scored on a single by C Casey Hicks (Gallaudet) to give the Grays an all-important insurance run and an 8-6 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. Jayson Yano (Stevens Tech), who had started the game at second base, shut the door on the Nationals in the bottom of the ninth for his first save of the season and the win moves the Grays into first place in the early season. The Grays play two on Monday, as they take on the Bethesda Big Train in a doubleheader at Bethesda’s Shirley Povich Field. The first game starts at 5:00 pm. |
