GAME RECAP (Grays vs. Express 6-9-16)
By: DCGrays Radio: Josh Shelton @JoshNLISports Both the Baltimore Dodgers and the visiting DC Grays brought hot bats to their game Saturday night. The Grays were on the short end of the slugfest, falling 18-9 and sliding into last place of the Cal Ripken Collegiate South with a record of 1-4. At the plate, the Grays continue to produce runs with 1B Marques Inman (West Virginia) leading the charge, going 3 for 5 with two extra-base hits and a pair of RBIs. CF Jawan McAllister (Pittsburgh) also produced, with three hits, including a double, two RBIs, but was thrown out on two stolen base attempts. It was another tough night for the Grays pitching staff, as they allowed double-digit runs for the second night in a row. The starter, RHP Evan Jordan (SE Louisiana), only lasted two and third innings, allowing eight runs, four earned, on nine hits. The only pitcher out of the four who took the mound to not give up a run was RHP Trey Congleton (Fairleigh Dickinson) who pitched two innings and only allowed a single hit while recording three strikeouts. The Grays team ERA jumped to an unsightly 6.49 after tonight’s loss. The Grays defense also struggled as they committed six errors in the field resulting in only half of the runs scored by the Dodgers being ruled earned runs. The team will look to snap a two game losing streak Sunday back home against the Vienna River Dogs (3-3) at 1:00pm at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy. DCGrays.com Press The Grays dropped a high-scoring affair to the visiting FCA Herndon Braves at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy on Friday night, losing by a score of 10-7. The loss drops the Grays’ Ripken League record to 1-3 on the young season. The Grays’ bats struck early and led after one inning. After CF Jawann McAllister (Pittsburgh) led off with a double, LF Luke Robinson (Lafayette) with a double. After a single by 3B Marques Inman (West Virginia), DH Lucas Martinez (Cal State San Bernadino) scored Robinson with an RBI ground out and the Grays lead 2-0. The Grays fell behind after four innings but quickly rebounded to tie the game at six with a two RBI triple from RF Lamar Briggs (Jackson State) in the bottom of the sixth. The Grays then allowed three runs in the top of the seventh and one in the top of the ninth. The score was 10-6 as the Grays batted in the bottom of the ninth. 1B Drake Hollingsworth (Alabama-Huntsville) gave the home fans hope when he crushed a 3-1 offering for his first home run of the season. Unfortunately, that was it for the Grays and the final score was 10-7. The pitching was uneven for the home team. Lefty Bo Burrup (BYU) pitched well in relief once again as he struck out four batters over three innings and allowed no earned runs. Starting pitcher Scott Bean (Slippery Rock) pitched three innings and allowed four earned runs while also striking out three Braves batters. Reliever Bryan Quillens (Eastern Kentucky) took the loss, giving up three earned runs in three innings of work. On Saturday the Grays will go on the road to face the Baltimore Dodgers (1-3) at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover, MD. On the mound for the Grays will be right hander Evan Jordan (SE Louisiana). By: DCGrays Radio: Josh Shelton @JoshNLISports After dropping the first two games of the season, the DC Grays put a tally in the win column on Thursday night, winning 8-4 over the Rockville Express at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy. The Grays did their first bit of damage with a five-run second inning. The Grays batted around the order on only two hits – the biggest a long double by RF Vinnie Catanza (Florida Atlantic U.) that drove in two runs. Catanza would eventually come around to score on a throwing error before the inning was over. RHP David Giusti (Lafayette) got the win tonight, going five and two thirds innings and allowing four runs before being replaced by LHP Jake Erikson (San Diego St.). Erikson, tonight’s Player of the Game, didn’t allow a hit during his three and a third innings pitched. In the eighth inning, with the Grays clinging to a 5-4 lead, the home team bats came alive again and put the game out of reach. 3B Marques Inman (West Virginia) lead off the inning with a stand up double off the center field fence. DH Zach McCrum (Eastern Kentucky) was hit by a pitch for a second time, and LF Luke Robinson (Lafayette) drove in both Inman and McCrum with a two-run triple. Robinson would come in to score the eighth and final run for the Grays when a routine fly ball dropped. The Grays will look to add to their win total Friday night where they will take on the FCA Herndon Braves at 7:00pm at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. By DCGrays.com Press
This year the Grays have organized a host of extracurricular events for the players. Washington, DC is one of the most fit cities in America, so our first event was to engage the players in a “kettlebell” workout. Dynamic Solutions owned and operated by Darius Gilbert is one of the premier sports training facilities in the area. Darius and his team organized a hour and a half long workout designed to reduce injury and improve arm strength. As our players found out, the core is critical and if you want to play well you have to be strong and balanced. If nothing else the Grays will now be the strongest team in the league. The Grays (0-2) showed some late inning life in last night’s loss on the road at Silver Spring. They look to bounce back tonight hosting the Rockville Express (1-2). Tonight David Giusti (Lafayette) will take the mound for his first start of the season for the Grays. The Grays look to overcome some early season jitters that have led to both losses so far. Errors and numerous men left on base will be the challenge that the team needs to overcome. First Pitch is scheduled for 7p at the home of the Dc Grays the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy (3675 Ely Place SE, Washington, DC). GAME RECAP (Grays at T-Bolts 6-8-2016)
DCGrays.com Press: By Blane Crouse @bcrouse_6 The Grays traveled to Blair Stadium to face the T Bolts with hopes of getting in the win column after a loss in the season opener. Unfortunately the Grays fell just short, losing 7-5. The game saw some good performances be several Grays. After Matthew Dalke (Southeastern Louisiana) drew the start for the Grays and pitched four innings, he was relieved by Bo Burrup (BYU). Burrup pitched three dominant innings for the Grays, not allowing a hit and striking out seven batters. Even with Burrup’s outstanding pitching the Grays found themselves in a 7-2 hole entering the top of the 9th. In the top of the 9th the Grays quickly loaded the bases as Parker Farley (Alabama-Huntsville), Jawan McAllister (Pittsburgh) and Tanner Sampson (Mount St. Mary’s) all reached base. Marques Inman (West Virginia) then drove in Farley to make the score 7-3. McAllister and Sampson then both scored on wild pitches making it 7-5. Unfortunately the Grays could not complete the rally. Marques Inman went 2-5 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base to lead the Grays. Jawan McAllister went 2-4 and scored two runs. The Grays return home Thursday as they take on the Rockville Express and look to get their first win of the year. The game will be at 7:00pm at The Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.
