GAME PREVIEW (Grays vs Dodgers) 6-20-2016
By: DCGrays.com Press: Blane Crouse The Grays defeated the Baltimore Dodgers in dramatic fashion on Monday night. The final was 6-5, with the home standing Grays tying the game in the eighth inning and winning it in the ninth. The win puts the Grays over .500 for the first time, with a record of 7-6. The Grays now sit in a tie for second place in the South Division and are riding a three game win streak into an off day tomorrow. The Dodgers struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on a throwing error by the Grays in the second inning. The Grays quickly answered in the third inning as LF Luke Robinson (Lafayette) singled and came around to score on a throwing error by the Dodgers. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Grays CF Jawan McAllister (Pittsburgh) hit his second home run of the season, driving in Robinson who had reached on a walk. McAllister’s blast gave the Grays a 3-1 lead. The Dodgers answered the Grays with a run of their own in the sixth inning and then two runs in the seventh giving – taking a 4-3 lead. The Dodgers continued to add to their lead with a lone run in the top of the eighth inning. Going into the bottom of the eighth the Grays trailed 5-3 and badly needed some offense to keep their win streak going. Thankfully, that offense came in the form of two RBI singles that tied the game – one from RF Lamar Briggs (Jackson St) and SS Eric Sloper (Shepherd). The Grays were in a good spot in the bottom of the ninth as the top of their lineup lead off the inning. Robinson flew out to start the inning, bringing up McAllister who was hit by a pitch. 3B Marques Inman (West Virginia) then doubled down the left field line to move McAllister to third base with one out. C Evan Pace (SE Louisiana) was intentionally walked to load the bases and put all the pressure on DH Denzel Chapman (San Diego St). Chapman quickly fell behind 0-2 but worked the count back to 2-2 before hitting a blooper in to the shallow infield. The Dodgers tagged one runner and attempted to throw Chapman out at first but he beat the throw as McAllister crossed home plate giving the Grays the win. Starting pitcher Jake Josephs (Old Dominion) went 6.1 innings allowing three earned runs and striking out three batters. Brian Quillens (Eastern Kentucky) allowed a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning, and Trey Congleton (Fairleigh Dickinson) came on in relief and held the fort for 1.1 innings of scoreless ball. Lefty Bo Burrup (BYU) pitched two thirds of an inning in the ninth and got the win – moving his record to 2-0. Next up, the Grays will host the Gaithersburg Giants at Nats Youth Academy on Wednesday, June 22nd at 7:00 p.m, as they look to increase their win streak to four games. The Grays will be hosting players and coaches from Ward 7 Baseball, which is part of the new DC Grays RBI program.

By: DCGrays.com Press; Blane Crouse: @bcrouse_6 On Saturday night the Grays defeated the Vienna Riverdogs 5-4 to improve their record to 5-6. This win puts the Grays only one and a half games out of first place in the South Division about a quarter of the way through the season. The Grays found themselves behind early as they trailed 1-0 at the end of the second inning. However they struck back in the top of the fourth, taking a 2-1 lead as DH Tyler Thomas (Shepherd) and SS Eric Sloper (Shepherd) both drove in runs. The Grays could not escape the fourth inning with the lead as the Riverdogs scored a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth, tying the score at two. In the top of the fifth the Grays offense came alive once again as RF Lamar Briggs (Jackson State) drove in LF Luke Robinson (Lafayette) with a double. Later in the inning C Drake Hollingsworth (Alabama-Huntsville) scored on a wild pitch bringing the score to 4-2 in favor of the Grays. The Riverdogs then answered back with a home run in the bottom of the fifth and another run in the bottom of the seventh to tie it at four. In the top of the eighth, 2B Parker Farley (Alabama-Huntsville) came through in the clutch with a single that drove in Thomas. This was all the scoring the Grays needed as RHP Bryan Quillens (Eastern Kentucky) and LHP Bo Burrup (BYU) shut down the Riverdogs’ offense for the final two innings. The Grays relief pitching was outstanding, and the key relievers were rewarded. Burrup got the win and Quillens got the save as the two combined for eight strikeouts over only three innings pitched. The back of the Grays lineup was particularly potent at the plate, as the six through nine hitters all drove in key runs in the win. 1B Marques Inman (West Virginia) continued his impressive season going two for four with a walk and a run scored. Next up for the Grays will be another road game as they travel to Rockville to take on the Express (3-8) on Father’s Day. The Grays defeated the Express in their first meeting of the year, 8-4. On the mound for the Grays will be LHP Jacob Erikson (San Diego State) who won the Pitcher of the Week award for week one of the Ripken League season. Erikson is 1-0 on the year with a 0.73 ERA. By: DCGrays Radio: Josh Shelton @JoshNLISports After getting blown out Wednesday night by the Baltimore Redbirds, the DC Grays came back with a vengeance against the Alexandria Aces. The Grays improved to 4-5 on the year with the 5-0 win, solidifying their spot in fourth place of the Cal South division of the Ripken League. The game only lasted six and half innings due to inclement weather. The Grays took advantage of a steady wind blowing out to left field, blasting two home runs. RF Jawan McAllister (Pittsburgh) sent a solo shot over the bullpen into straightaway left in the opening frame. C Evan Pace (SE Louisiana) followed suit with a dinger of his own in the bottom of the fourth. Offensive production was spread out between the two through six hitters, each recording an RBI. The two homers were the first two given up by normally strong Aces pitching staff. Only one pitcher was needed for the Grays. RHP David Giusti (Lafayette) threw six and one third shutout innings. Giusti allowed just three hits, recorded two strikeouts, and improved to two wins in two starts. The Grays will travel to Bethesda tonight to take on the Big Train at 7:30pm EST.
