MLBPA Players Trust and Cal Ripken Foundation co-host with GraysJune 19, 2012 – The DC Grays of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League will co-host a free youth baseball clinic with the MLBPA Players Trust and the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation on Thursday, June 21 at 9:30am at Hoy Field on the campus of Gallaudet University.
More than 200 DC kids between the ages of 6-16 are expected to participate in the clinic, where they will be coached by DC Grays players and coaches, and coaches from the Ripken Foundation. They will also meet Washington Nationals players Roger Bernadina, Ian Desmond, Daniel Espinosa, Edwin Jackson and Xavier Nady. The Nationals players will answer questions and sign autographs. They will arrive at approximately 11:30am. The free clinic is part of the DC Grays ongoing community outreach program–a key part of the Grays’ pledge to be “ambassadors for baseball” in Washington, DC. The Grays will host additional clinics at Hoy Field during the summer, and the team also hosts local Little Leagues and youth baseball organizations at its home games. The Grays have already hosted the Capitol Hill Little League and the DC RBI Little League all-stars at home games thus far in 2012. Walk-off win for Grays over T-BoltsJune 18, 2012 – The DC Grays snapped their four-game losing skid in thrilling fashion, besting the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts 12-11 on a dramatic three-run game winning home run by DH Josh Powell (Alcorn State) in the bottom of the 9th at Hoy Field.
Powell’s blast was one of four round-trippers for the Grays, who overcame an 8-0 second-inning deficit. Hot hitting 1B Kris Moules (Morehead State) had three hits including a home run, as did CF Billy Bissell (Gallaudet). SS Zach Lopes (Delaware) also homered for the Grays. Powell’s walk-off shot made a winner of Grays reliever Blake Louscher (Central Michigan), who along with Charlie Baxter (Williams) and Chris Nee (Catholic) gave the Grays effective innings out of the bullpen. Grays blasted by AcesJune 17, 2012 – The DC Grays lost a lopsided contest to the host Alexandria Aces this afternoon, dropping a 14-4 decision on Father’s Day. The loss drops the Grays to 3-8 on the season.
Grays 1B Kris Moules (Morehead State) whacked two home runs in a losing effort, and LF Matt Kianka (Central Arizona CC) continued his hot hitting with two more hits. The Grays return home to Hoy Field tomorrow to face the Silver Spring Tacoma Thunderbolts at 5:00pm. Grays drop third straight, lose to BravesJune 16, 2012 – A late rally by the DC Grays wasn’t enough to avert a third-straight loss, this time a 5-3 loss to the Herndon Braves at Hoy Field.
The Grays scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to put a scare into the Braves, but for most of the night the Grays’ bats were quiet. The exception was LF Matt Kianka (Central Arizona), who had three hits. The loss spoiled another good outing by Joel Castillo (Morehead State), who pitched effectively for six-plus innings. The Grays travel to Alexandria tomorrow to play the Aces in a Fathers’ Day afternoon game. The Grays’ record now stands at 3-7.
The Grays hosted the Capitol Hill Little League at their game at Hoy Field against the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts last week. The DC RBI Little League is part of the national “Reviving Baseball in the Inner-city” (RBI) program, funded in part by Major League Baseball. The young ballplayers that will be at Hoy Field on Saturday night are some of the most accomplished in the DC RBI program, since they also play in the CBA Travel League in addition to the DC RBI Little League.
Grays President Mike Barbera and General Manager Antonio Scott met Corey Jordan, coach of the DC RBI all-stars, at a Washington Nationals youth baseball clinic at National Park on May 19, and discussed the idea of working together to promote youth baseball in Washington. “We are very excited to host the DC RBI all-stars at Hoy Field,” said Grays General Manager Antonio Scott. “This is central to our mission to promote youth baseball in Washington, DC. We want our DC Grays players to be positive role models for young inner-city kids from all over the community.” Grays stifled by RiverdogsJune 15, 2012 – The DC Grays dropped their second straight game tonight, losing 4-1 to the Vienna River Dogs at Hoy Field. The loss dropped the Grays to 3-6 in their inaugural season.
As has often been the case this season, the Grays offense was anemic–the team managed only one run on four hits against Riverdogs pitchers Tyler Frazier (UNC-Greensboro) and Justin Albright (George Washington). Grays shortstop Zach Lopes (University of Delaware) had the Grays’ sole RBI of the game, driving in LF Tommy Barksdale (Gallaudet University) in the seventh. Click here for stats and the boxscore. Grays starter Joe Donino (Columbia University) went five and a third, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Grays pitchers Chris Nee (Catholic University) and Blake Louscher (Central Michigan) combined for three and two-thirds innings of shutout relief.
